Switching Farmall M from 6 volt to 12 volt

Ben
I had never went there before. Lots of good reading.

Some of it should be updated , who does that?

One thing the posters here on the forums talked about was the external resistor bypass for starting. Anyone who uses a tractor in cold areas should never used the internal ballasted coils. You will never get as hot a spark as when you bypass the resistance at starting.

The 300u I just bought would not fire until I ran a jumper past the ballast resister. Started in one pulse on the starter then. This was at 0 C or 32 F.

The archives are full of stuff about doing it since it is common as sun light or so it seems. Not hard to do if you ave a few skills. A simple alternator from a 1980 Chev no power any thing a shorter belt and a new bracket and then the simple wiring and your done. That is a 3 wire alternator. One big post which goes to the battery in some way starter switch etc. then it has a plug which is marked #1 and #2. The #2 goes to the big post and the #1 goes to the ignition switch the side that is hot when turned on. You do need a diode like the radio shack 276-1661 in line to stop feed back of the ignition system

Great wiring diagram by BobM. Turn genera5tor mounting bracket upside down and with some shimming will work.

Put the alternator in front of the bracket. All you need is a piece of 3/8 all-thread and a few more nuts. The top bracket needs a 2 1/2 bolt and an extra nut. I've done several like this without a problem.
