300 shift problem progress!

Dropped lube out of the 300 rear end. about 2 gallons of water and a little oil! Pulled trans top every thing covered with chunks of rust!Just don't know what to do with it. I have about $1700 sunk in so far.I think this is going to be a never in the field tractor.

Dann,
Does the tractor roll and shift properly now that you have the gunk out.
If so I think you are going to be good to go after just a good cleaning.
Flush it with good water pressure.
Fill with about a gallon of fuel oil (with old gaskets) and run a bit.
Then drain and blow out with air pressure.
Then fill with good proper oil. I would include at least one quart of Lucas HD Oil Stabilizer. I use this in every trans and crankcase I own but it is a personal preference.

Delbert is right.

The only thing I would do differently is to get an air operated engine cleaning gun using diesel as a cleaning fluid. With the top off use the gun to clean everything off and the button up and fill with diesel to operating level. Run it around at a very low throttle setting going through the gears. After a good drain put the tranny oil in. Use the tractor moderately for a few weeks and do another drain. Check for any fillings then. If none you should be good to go.

i will confess that my 300u had a couple of pints in the rear differential when I got it. I drained down to thick oil so i will be doing the same procedure in the spring.

I think anyone who leaves these 300u's outside has to keep an eye on this. I think it is the top plate that leaks if it is not sealed well. It has a steel shift lever cover so I do not believe that is the issue.

If the rust is cleanable, it will be OK. If it is pitting the teeth and they are being eaten away, a different rear 1/2 Doner tractor might be a good option. Jim
