cargo winch on my 1952 TD

Does anybody have any experience with the cargo winches that fit on the older TD 6 crawlers. I have two TD 6 crawlers both have cargo winches. The winch on on one of the crawlers just stopped working today. My experience is installing one of the wionches on one of my TD 6 crawlers, and having the brake relined. The pto shaft is turning inside the winch and the forward and reverse lever works without noise. Lever that puts the winch in gear
icauses cliicking noise when engaaged. A removable plate on the winch provides access and a view to the place where the pto shaft from the transmission enters the winch.

I would open it up and I think you will find either the fork that slides the gear is messed up or the pinion gear has gone to a better place.

Larry,ile

Thank you for the information. Is it possible to open up the winch when it is still on the machine? I've been using the winch to yard logs and to pull over trees. It has been working great and it does sound like a problem with a fork . I've heard this type of noise before when working with transmissions.
It looks like the winch splits annd the back of the winch comes off. There is a plate on the winch which covers the input shaft and other gers are visible. Gears in this area look ok. Not possible to see the engagement fork in this area. Do you know of any sites on the internet where an exploded view of inside the winch could be viewed?

Good morning, Go to, www.paccarwinch.com, and you'll find CARCO WINCHES. They have pdf parts and service manuals there. Problem is I don't think there are any as old as yours. They are in Broken Arrow, Ok.
I can't remember the model numbers from back then but it should be on the winch somewhere.
Maybe a phone call can get you the coverage you need.
good luck

Dennis,

Thank you for the information. One of the winches on one of the TD 6 Crawlers I have is a:
Cargomatic Model E serial 8761 Bottom of the plate has Pacific Car and
Foundary stamped Plate is gone off the other winch but they look identical. I'll check out the site you gave me and will call County Line Equipment tomorrow. Several of the people there have good knowledge on. the TD6 crawlers

ejensen,
If you are talking about County Line in Fife, that would be a good start.
You must be in Washington. They are good folks there.
By the way it is Carco not Cargo.
Good luck
Dennis

Dennis,

Thanks again for sending an email. Correction noted carco, not cargo. I've been putting cargo winches in google. No wonder I've been coming up with carco winches for boats. Yes, I do live in Washngton. We have our home in Seattle and the tractors are on Orcas Island. I've been getting parts for my older crawlers for years from County Line.

Well, have fun with your dozers. Glad to help. I have a 1948 T6 narrow gauge but no winch.
We lived in Covington for several years a few years ago. Worked in Tukwila and Auburn. We have been to the Islands, it's very nice up there.

I really don't. What I was drawing on was my experience with a Cat D6 that I ran in the logging woods up in northern New Mexico when I was back in my teens. On ours we had a lever and linkage that went up to the platform and mine broke one day and as I think back the mechanic did have to remove the winch and pulled it apart on the ground. But I do remember that when I looked at it I could see the broken shift fork. Is it a Browney or Cat Warn? Hell, I don't even remember who made the ones on that old machine. I do remember the mechanic was pi**ed because there was so much paint on it he couldn't get a socket on the head of the bolts. lol. Sorry I can't give you more without seeing the thing. LarryT

Larry,

Sounds like you are familiar with the State of Washington. I'm going to have a truck with a tilt trailer move both my TD 6 crawlers. Bring the one with winch problems to my shop and take the one with working winch to where I am clearing land at Doebay on Orcas Island. I have a D2 with a Hyster winch I thought caterpillars had Hyster winches. Sending you my website. Both td 6 crawlers with winches are on this website. One of the TD6 crawlers does not have a winch.

Dennis. Your website for paccar was excellent. Contacted a Bill at Paccar. He sent me a parts manual and a service manual for the carcomatic model E winch by email. Additonally he gave me two sources for parts. Contacted County Line Equipment this morning. Talked to Corky and Bill. They sell total winches. Corky asked if I had tried holding the engagement lever in place. He told me he ran an International with carco winch for 10 years by simply holding the engagement lever in place. Moved the crawlers today and proceeded to throw a track while getting down in a stump hole while pushing out the stump. The TD 6 I took to the place where we are clearing has a very good workable carco winch. Hooked the winch line about 6 feet off the ground, held both steering clutches out of gear and pulled myself out of the whole. Tomorrow another project--slacken off the track adjuster jack up the crawler and hopefull without splitting the track get the rail back on the back sproket. Rails are good but machine does not have track guards. Rocks got in between the rollers and track chain. Thanks again for the help.

Chris,
Sounds like you are having way too much fun. Glad all worked out for you finding info from paccar. You know your winch was probably manufactured in Renton on the banks of Lk Washington. They had a huge facility there, gone now, building rail cars, winches and many other things. Kenworth Truck, was/is part of paccar and I think still has a facility near the original location.
I'm amazed that Corky is still at County Line. I dealt with him over 20yrs ago.
I also visited your web site. Looks like you have way too many toys.
Have fun
Dennis

Dennis,

Thank you for information regarding manufacturing of Carco winches. I started working in Seattle in 1966. Howard Cooper was located on 4th avenue and I was continually visiting their shop and asking the mechanics questions. Corky at County Line is a great source of information. The majority of tractors I have were abandoned in the woods, in old buildings, and the majority of then were free. A project with the TD 6 I took to Doebay. While pushing out the stump of a tree I pulled over with the winch: Got the trator's blade under the stump. Right track came off the back sproket and fell off to the inside. Pulled the tractor out from the stump hole. Up against a tree of course. Used the HD 6 to pull the TD 6 around to a level place. Jacked up the tractor, slacked off the track adjustor and had a person who is taking trees from my place use his small excavator to pull the track back on theprocket while I carefully held left steering clutch released position and put power in reverse to right track. It worked--I'm not going to do anymore large stump removal with my TD 6.

Strange you mention Howard Cooper. I worked for them for 24yrs as a mechanic and then later years in service management 1964-1988.
The last 6 yrs in Tukwila but never on 4th ave. They were a good company. Out of business in 1991 or 2.
Enjoy your projects on the Island.

Dennis,

You may know some of the people I knew at Howard Cooper on 4th avenue Seattle. Abernathy was in the injection pump room, and Howard and Dave were in sales for parts. When I ordered parts they would put my parts on orders that Weyerhauser made. I would get parts in one day. Yes Howard Cooper as a great company.

Chris

Chris,
Don Abernathy worked for me in the pump room. He was a great guy and very good pump man. He passed away a few years ago. His son Don also worked there. I don't recall the names in parts. I do remember a Jim and Dale.

Dennis,

Yes, Don was excellent working on injection pumps. The pump on my 1948TD 6 was rebuilt by Don. It still works perfectly. The first time I met Don I had disassembled the injection pump and gave it to him in a 5 gallon bucket. Don was not happy: Said to me "don't you ever do that again." I felt lucky that he agreed to rebuild my pump. He also did some work for Corky at County LIne Equipment. Interesting that his Son worked for International Harvester. Chris
