Found out its the Genny....

I did the test according to John T's diagnosis(Thanks it was really helpful!) and the Cut out was fine. Now i still have the problem of a 3 position light switch and a 4 terminal cutout, if this wont hurt anything im not worrying about it now. But my question is how involved is it to diagnose the Genny? and if its the brushes, as I'm hoping, will a rookie like me be able to fix it or should i just trust it to a guy who has a lot more experience than I?

I might just be fortunate but the auto-electric shop in town has a person that is very knowledgeable of these old tractor generators and has almost everything on hand to repair them. Except when I needed an ammeter replaced on a generator the cost has always been in the $15-$30 range. I won't think of dealing with it myself and he also gives them a through check out when done and have yet to have to take one back the 2nd time. I just pay for his experience and save my money on something I know a little bit about, Hal.

The most common genny problemns are worn down brushes which are easy to repair yourself. Also make sure the brush hold down springys are free and are putting downward pressure on the brushes and the commutator is shined up clean free of oil and carbon. The bushings/bearigns cant be worn to where the armature is brushing the field poles.

My Troubleshooting procedure taught you how to see if non charging is a genny or VR/Relay problem and its Motor test can also show the gennys condition.
