300 operating temps.

do you guy's think i need a new thermostat. i was plowing snow this morning and my average engine temp was about 150-160 degrees, now it was also 8 degrees air temp outside this a.m. but i was thinking that it might be running a little cool and my therm might be hung open alittle?

I'd cover the radiator. Those old tractors were built to run cool when working the tar out of them in hot weather. It's pretty hard to get them warmed up in the winter. And change your oil pretty often.

Mike - The 300 has a bypass passage cast into the t'stat housing. Even when the t'stat is closed tight the bypass allows enough coolant flow to prevent the engine from coming up to operating temperature in cold weather/light load situations.

Like the Cowman suggests, mounting a winterfront over the grille in cold weather helps a bunch. I used 'em on both my SH and SM when the temps drop below about 40 deg. They warm up MUCH more quickly and will hold 180 deg on the gage even during prolonged idling.

The IH thermostat for 300 is listed as (165 degrees-195 degrees) so at 8 degree air temperaturs sounds to me that temperature is about right.
