Charging system on H that has a magneto.

I have an h that has a magneto. I have had it wired before that i had positive on my ampmeter. I still have the original 6 volt system. I am beyond confused. If i have the magneto will my generator run the tractor and recharge my battery. It is getting old having my battery drain.

If you REALLY have a magneto it makes it's own electricity/spark and operates TOTALLY independently of the battery and charging system.

In fact, you can remove the generator and battery and it will run just the same.

With a magneto, unless you are running lights, there is NO drain to the battery while it is runny, only what the starter draws while cranking.

Ok, but if you have the generator and its hooked up as shown in the schematic drawing in the post a few down will i be able to charge my battery or still no?( Its the post about a voltage regulator problems)

I went through my system with a volt meter. I have 6 volts up to my Voltage regulator. I have 6 on the load and the battery terminals but have less than one on the terminal that runs to the arm post of my generator. Is this the VR or the Genny? I also have good grounds throughout.

First of all, have you polarized it?

If not, with the engine stopped, momentarily jumper from the BATT terminal on the regulator to the ARM terminal on the regulator to polarize the GENERATOR.

If still not charge when yopu start it up, (for a short period of time) "full-field" the generator by grounding it's "F" terminal (with the engine running above slow idle).

If it then charges, that would point to a bad regulator or wire between the generator and regulator or an improperly grounded regulator.

If it DOESN'T charge when full fielded, that would indicate a bad generator.

As the others indicate there is no connection between the Magneto and the charging system.
Thus if the battery is not being charged the generator is not charging.
We need to know if it has a real voltage regulator or a cutout relay system. If the light switch has 4 positions LHDB it probably had a cutout system on it originally.
If it has a 3 position light Switch, it probably has a voltage regulator.
(but who knows what has been modified.

If there are 4 terminals on the Voltage regulator looking device, it is a Regulator.

The following link will make sense of it. Jim
John T charging analysis

There should indeed be near battery voltAGE ON THE BAT and LOAD terminals on the VR but once running at RPM there obviously must be more then 1 volt on the Gennys ARM post or GEN/ARM on the VR as those are wired together. If you only have 1 volt on the gennys ARM post when running shes NOT charging.

Jim was kind enough to post above a link to my Troubleshooting procedure so run through that n see what you find. In its Para 5 it tells how to determine if non charging is a Genny versus the VR problem and for sure be sure the genny is polarized as Bob pointed out

Thanks for all the help, Im gonna hit it hard tomorrow morning and see where that takes me. I have the three position switch but the four terminal regulator. Will this be a problem?

That would be normal.
The L terminal attaches to the light switch only.
Depending on year, it will attach to a fuse holder built onto the back of the light switch. Jim

This is a 3 position switch.Because I have a wire from the fuse to the ammeter"the small jumper" that means I have to disconnect the L from my vol reg...and it worked or you can take off the small wire from the fuse to the gauge. If i had a distributor i would need power all the time but not with a mag.
