SWD-9 and WD-9

What is the best way to tell these 2 tractors apart.Other than the stickers on the sides..The tag on the supossed SWD-9 has the S worn off in front of the W...trying to determine if it is a legit Super...Thanks in advance....

the super came out with 18.4x34 rear rubber and wider rims which bolt to the hub instead of those clamps that the wd9 had with 16.9x34.the super came out with disc brakes also. had the small square ih logo instead of mccormick on top of rad. this is some of the visual changes that are easy to spot.

Basicly the same tire size options and wheel options were available on the later WD-9 and the SWD-9 so that is not a visual indicator. The disk brakes and IH on the front of the Super WD-9 vs band brakes and McCormick or McCormick Deering on the front of the grill of the WD-9 are the best visual indicators.

Tire size is tough bc you can change it too easly over the last 50 years.

Couldn't you also read the casting numbers? It wouldn't pin point it, but it would certainly get you in the ballpark.

well what is the serial # then ? thats another easy way. if you have a 3 or 4 digit # and you have the super options then pretty darn sure its a SUPER. the straight wd's would have a 5 digit #past 1944. and lights is another thing , supers have sealed beams. same with disc brakes they were installed on the last straight 9's also. OR hook it to a 18ft. vibrashank, put it in forth gear, if it pulls then its a SUPER.

Doesn't a regular WD9 have a serial prefix WDCB compared to SWD9 for super? Super will have D350 stamped on the engine block.

Really!?! That is a heck of a hp difference!

Duh, why didn't I think of just looing at the numbers rather than the prefix.

yes , but these inexperienced people give us as little info as they can. thats why i asked for the serial#. just because he said the S was worn off there is still more #'s that tell the story!
then you give them info and somebody else says , cant go by that because the tires are too easy to change.i have not seen Super hubs and rims yet on a straight 9, not saying that it cant be done though.so few Supers around that i dont think someone would wreck a super to fix a sraight nine.
