Farmall super c head

Hello I have a super c that was my grandfathers, I am restoring it and the head had a few stuck valves and very rusty valve seats. The head is part number 251172R2. I found a rebuilt head with the part number 251172R1, it will probably be cheaper to buy then to have the original one rebuilt. Heres my questions, what is the difference between the two? Will I lose any compression by going with the rebuilt head?

Any info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Ryan

I would have the original head magna-fluxed and if it isn't cracked I would have a valve job done it. It may need guides and may just need a valve job. They can clean up the valve seats with the rust. Hal
PS: I would have that crankshaft measured for wear. It may need undersize bearings and your local auto machine shop can determine that. Buy your new bearings from them too.

Are you sure you have a Super C. The head number 251172R2 is listed in my parts info for a C, not a Super C. The 251172 head is for a C113 engine, not the C123. I think it would work, but not really correct. If you want a rebuilt 251172 head, I have one I will sell reasonable. Shipping is costly though unless you are close by me. Send me an E mail if you want more info.

In the hundred series book it shows the head number 251172r2 was also used on the 100"s and 200"s in the 1950"s. So I"m thinking it could have been used on the super c"s.

I'm going by the parts CD that I've had for several years. It only shows the 251172 head for the C and not other tractors. It does show a 251173 head assembly for the 200 and for the C-123 engine, but that is for an assembly and is not the head casting number. The CD has been updated and it's possible that an original parts catalog for the Super C, etc might have shown that the 251172 head casting was used on the Super C and then it was changed. However, the CD usually says "will work for part #####" in those cases.

I just realized that I didn't really answer your question. I am sure I have a super c, the block is 354898R2 and the cast years are x and y which is 1952 and 1953. And it has the taller grill and raised gas tank.

I'm always interested in trying to learn more about the IH part numbers. I have an original Super C parts catalog. It shows the crankcase casting number to be 354898, whereas the parts CD I have does not show that number anywhere. Neither the CD or the old original parts catalog show the 251172 casting number for the super C head. There are several different heads shown for the Super C in the CD, but none have that 251172 number. I have a C tractor (not a super) and it has the 251172 head on it. So go figure. Maybe the head for yours is original, they just used some leftovers from the C run, or someone changed your the head on your tractor. This is sort of an aside, but I also have a U-2 power unit. The location where the casting number is usually was ground off. When I took the head to the machine shop, they asked what is the head number. I said well, the part catalog says ##### ( can't recall the number) but I don't see that on this one anywhere. The machinist took a wire brush and knocked off some of the crud and says this head has been to the shop before as there is a stamping here. It was the head number listed in the parts catalog. So IH made some modification (or maybe not) and stamped the number to match the parts info.

Hello again I was in the garage yesterday and I was looking at the head and cleaning it up a bit and found there is a casting date on it. It has a Y for the year which means it was cast the same time as the rest of the chassis parts. So I am thinking the head could be original to the super c. Just thought you might be interested in that.
