Ford Glowplugs in IH Precombustion Chamber Diesels

A fellow over on the AgTalk forum was talking about a D282 that had the pre-combustion chambers tapped to accept Ford glowplugs. There are a couple advantages I can think of with this arrangement;
1. Quick heating element to reduce glowplug run time.
2. Cheaper - Ford glowplugs are selling for $19 online.

Does anyone here have experience doing this? I"d love to hear more details on what plugs to buy, wiring changes, etc.

I have a D188 in my 504 which uses the same injectors. If this is true I may be interested in more info too. It takes about 30-60 seconds of glow plugs to crank my 504 in Louisiana winter, and yes they all work. Just a cold natured engine design. When I have the water heater plugged in it doesn't even need the GP.

Thanks,

CT

More likely is that the holes just happen to be the same size, but which Ford engine uses those same glow plugs? Just curious if they are from a Ford tractor, or truck engine or what?

Depends on what glow plugs your're talking about. Ford does not make any glow-plugs. Ford buys them from other companies and sticks them in a Ford or Motorcraft box.

Last I checked most glow-plugs sold by Ford are made by Beru in Germany. Same for the glow-plugs GM and Delco sells.

Many European companies make glow plugs with many amp-ratings, heat times, voltage ratings, burn-out protection, etc. When you want to retrofit into a older tractor, you just need to know the thread size and reach. Then you can have many choices of what you stick in there.
