Farmall A. Help, I've got an oil leak!

Hi guys (and ladies),

I have recently "finished" my restoration of my 1939 A. I never
touched the front of the engine. I did have the oil pan off, but I
have sealed it up nicely and do not think it's leaking. But I am
getting a leak up front on the engine. I did have the magneto
off. I cannot see where it is leaking, but it's dripping down from
somewhere. Before I did the restoration, it did not leak oil.
Could it be leaking from the magneto or magneto bolts? That's
the only place up front I touched. It was running fine and still is.
One or two cranks at half choke and she's purring.

Any ideas?

Hopefully as part of the restoration you cleaned the outside of the engine completely. That being the case you should be able to trace the source of the leak. You might need a flashlight and mirror on an extention wand. Not really that many places an oil leak can hide on that engine.

Yeah, I cleaned and painted the whole thing. It looks like it's coming from the area around the man bearing, maybe around the plate that is bolted to the front of the engine. But I'm not sure and I hate to take it all apart to find out. ( grille, radiator, fan, belt pulley, who knows what.

you mentioned fan. just a thought if you over fill fan hub when servicing it they will leak and oil will be blown back on front of engine as there is no seal on hub.

It could be. But I think there is too much oil for that. I checked around the fan, because that was leaking, but it wasn't leaking much, so I didn't "fix" it. After all, I am just as old as that tractor and I leak a little too!

you said you replaced the pan gasket, what about the front seal.it will leak there look behind the front pulley i bet you will find it wet

It is leaking at the front main seal. They are known for leaking around both the front and rear main seals. In removing the oil pan, the aluminum lower part of the front main seal must have been tweaked just a little bit which started the oil leak. I don't know if there is a way to fix the leak without pulling the motor or not because I did the seals on mine while my motor was on the engine stand.

Now you guys are making me have cold sweats!! I am afraid it is the front seal. I just don't want to admit it to myself.

Am I going to have to take off the front steering to change that seal and the front gasket?

Unfortunately you will have to remove the front to replace the front main seal.

Here's a picture of when I did this on my B. I made a simple stand from a piece of square tubing and some angle iron. Should work the same on an A.

When I did this A back in 1975 I unbolted the steering and rolled the front wheels out from under the tractor. You have to support the engine. The hood and radiator was already off when I bought it. Then you can access the damper pulley and pull it. You need to look at the hub on the pulley since it will probably have a groove worn into the surface of the hub from the old seal. You can install a speedi-sleeve over that groove so the new seal has a new surface to ride on. I had to pull the engine on my tractor since it needed a complete rebuild with new sleeves, pistons and bearings. Hal
