300 won't free wheel

Traded for a farmall 300! It would go in gear but would not come out of gear with out using a lot of force. Did not matter where TA was. Adjusted main clutch adjusted TA clutch no change! Tractor will not roll in netural! Will not roll with clutch down. Pulled top TA cover rocked tractor TA jumps up and down. It act like its in gear. What bearing, or shaft ,or ?? is the cause of it locked ? Thanks

If it will not roll in neutral, there is something bound up (either in the trans, or one of the brakes. These are the two most likely issues. Lets go for the brakes first. With it in neutral engine off. Go to the back of the tractor and violently push and pull on each tire. If one of them moves a little bit more than the other, and the tractor front end tends to wiggle that way as well, it is the brake on the side moving least. To assure your self of this, it is only necessary to take the small cap out of the center of the brake housing (looks like a wheel bearing cap) and watch it while rocking the tractor. If it does not move at all, that brake is rusted solid. Disassemble that brake, and free it up. Not a dramatic job.
If it is free, put the cap back and do the same to the other side. If they are both free, the issue is in the transmission.
Unbolt the shifter from the platform and look in the hole. All the shift rails in the selector area must be aligned with each other across the center of the opening left to right. if any are out of place, put a big screw driver down the hole and move then to be aligned. It might take blocking the clutch down, and rocking the tractor to free it enough to get them aligned. Reinstall the lever with the tip in that groove.

Try these things first then get back to us. Jim

I had the same problem with my 400. I pulled the cover above the TA clutch to satisfy my curiosity. I had adjusted the clutch linkage numerous times with no sucess. When I pulled the cover I see the pressure plate was dragging just a little bit on one side. In my case one of the pivot pins on the clutch fingers fell out. Once replaced the TA functioned perfectly. After a period of time externally adjusting the TA will no longer work because of clutch wear. You have to pull the cover like I did and adjust the clutch fingers. This is accomplished by ajusting the pivot bolts evenly. Pull the cover and make sure when you move the TA lever that the presure plate moves back about. 040" off the clutch. Just a little drag will lock the trans like you described. I know your frustration, nothing worse than finishing a pull and not being able to back up or get the old girl out of gear!

If it will not roll in neutral, an additional issue exists beyond the TA adjustment. Your point is well taken, but is needs to roll in N before further analysis. Jim

the tractor moved on its own when unloaded from trailer, but had to yank hard on shifter to get out of gear to change gears. Tractor will not roll with engine off and clutch pushed down. . Pulled shifter dose all shift rail notches need to be in line or just the 2 on left setting in seat and the one on right back? Thanks

I think we see the problem! All have to be in line. Good call Janicholson, that was my first guess. I didn't really think about brakes.
