happy tugboat newyear finally go home in a few days. this 1938 has the common mag on it but no ground wire Does the manual spark advance just hold the points open ground out somehow?? yes I'll be buyin a m,anual at somepoint thanks to all

The 37 we had if the spark lever was all the way up it mearly pulled it out of time to kill it.We never retarded the spark when starting as the impluse on the mag took care of that. Bud.PS,I only know about one and nothing about others.Bud.

Inside the F-4 mag is a metal tang that grounds the points when the spark lever is fully retarded (up). It is internal and can be seen inside where the points are.

Rotating the "Points Cup" up is supposed to ground out the condensor. However if the wire that is supposed to ground out the condensor breaks, the best was to kill the engine is to choke it -- we did that for years on Dad;s F-20

When I rebuild a F-4 mag, I disconnect the wire to the "Points Cup" and connect a wire directly to the condensor; "Sneak" that wire out the back of the mag; and use a one-wire kill switch from a letter series tractor to kill the engine on my F-series tractors.
