Ho of F-30 M

I dont think there much different. Its just that the M was higher geared than the 30. A man could plow all day with a 30 and 3 14s, and a man could plow all day with a M and 2 14s and cover around the same amount of ground. I guess that a mans subconcious told him that if he went faster, he got more done. Course, there were times when speed was useful, like hauling wagons, cultivateing/mowing, ect in a far field.

Hes right. Not everybody has flat or gently rolling ground. I came from the Missouri River bluffs, a mile away from the river, and the hills were S T E E P. Dads 37 WC pulled a 2 14, His A JDs pulled a 2 14, both a 41, and a 48. His 50 B pulled a 2 14, His 48 H Farmall pulled a 2 14, and the 41 M pulled a 2 14. All but the AC pulling a MM plow. My F-20 & 30 pulled it when I left home. My bro has a 70 JD that pulled a 2 14 jd plow.

Is anybody gonna give me the hp of a 30 and of a M??

F-30 is 24.9 at the drawbar and 32.8 at the belt. 5,300 lbs. without added weight. bore and stroke 4.25x5.00 inches 283.7 CID 1200 RPMs

M is 33.1 at the drawbar and 36.6 at the belt 4,900 lbs. without added weight. bore and stroke 3.875x5.25 inches 247.7 CID 1450 RPMs

so 9 more HP at the drawbar, but 400 lbs lighter. The F-30 is probably geared lower. I would expect the torque on the F-30 to equal or better the M at the same RPM. The f-30 should lug better, but the M with 9 more HP should be able to pull an extra plow.

so, using the farmall Cub as the base (at 9 HP and a 1 12" plow tractor), the M should pull 1 more plow than the F-30. My conclusion, it is VERY close to a toss-up, but I give the M the edge. They are so close, not sure I want to put money either way.

all my comments are based upon each tractor being STOCK, and not modified. I am a big fan of torque, but you do need the ponies to get work done.

as always: IMHO.

Keep in mind the numbers for the 30 are burning kerosene not gasoline and using steel wheels if I remember correctly. A F30 with an aftermarket gas manifold and a set of high dome pistons and rubber tires is a whole different animal and would work an unmodified M to death in the dirt. The M is just alot more pleasant for the operator.

36, I would agree. the F-30 buckets are bigger, and the stroke is only .25 shorter than the M. Big, slow engines will really lug, and if you run up the compression, then I would put an F-30 right at a stock M.

and I agree. 10 hours on an F-30 vs. 10 hours on an M doesn't even compare.....................

would be interesting to hook a stock F-30 drawbar to drawbar with a stock M.....................
