H Carburetor question

I purchased a H farmall that that has a carb ogg of a 300 on it. I can get the tractor to idle but is spits and sputters when I open up the throttle. I can"t seem to get this resolved. Will the tractor run good with this carb or do I need to carb for an H? Also I think the mounting plate holes on the manifold are too wide to accept a smaller carb. I have access to another manfold off of an H if need be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It should run fine with that carb. You need to make sure that the there is no junk in the carb and that it is getting enough fuel. Pull the inlet line off the carb and it should flow out pretty fast. Check the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, and condenser too. Just because a plug looks OK doesn't mean it is, unless you know they are new get new ones. Start with the cheap and easy and work your way up.

Hi Ohio,

I have had the carb apart a couple of times. I'll check the fuel flow again. I also put a second condenser on the tractor too and thought I had looked looked at the spark. I'll go back and take another look and see if I missed something.

thx

1st trouble shoot! Don't throw parts at it. Figure out what the problem is and fix just that.

Just because a plug sparks in open air don't mean it's good. There is more resistance under pressure and they can and will fail to produce spark. If you can't find anyplace close that has a tester and don't know when they were last replaced toss em and get new ones.

Check engine timing. If you have a multi tester check the resistance of the plug wires. OHM loss should be marked on the wires and is that many ohms per foot. Check your cap for carbon trace and cracks.

If you can close the choke part way and it helps, suspect the fuel flow or intake leak. If not look elsewhere.

Provided you have good fuel flow, it needs cleaning and possibly a new kit. And, the 300 carb is not adjusted like the H carb. Full power is with the main jet screw 5 turns out. It can be turned in for less load. If you adjust it like the H carb, main jet screw in until it stumbles, then out until smooth, it will not perform under load.

I had the same problem on my H, only with a stock H carb. The fuel flow looked good but I had nothing to compare it to, so like a novice I rebuilt the carb. Tested and found same problem (but I have experience rebuilding the carb now!). I took a flashlight and looked in the tank and found a bunch of stuff in the inlet line inside of the tank. I also found an old gas can cap in there too, siting on top of the inlet. I used mechanic wire wired on the end of a wooden dowel and pushed the crud through (I filled up the glass sediment bowl 3/4 of the way full!) and then cleaned the glass bowl. Then I refueled and tested-- OK! Runs better than it ever did since I owned it. Hope this helps.

Happy New Year!
