H valve train problem

I recently overhauled the engine on my H with new pistons and sleeves. I also had the head resurfaced and a three angle valve job done. The machine shop said they took 20 thousandths off the head. The problem I'm having is before I done anything the valve train was quiet and know that I have got it all back together I am getting a ticking noise from my rocker arms. I asked on here about a month ago what to set the clearance on the rockers at and I was told to do 20 thousandths cold on both, and I was told 17 thousandths warm on both. I have done it both ways but I am still getting the ticking. Both times I have adjusted them I have done it with the piston up and both valves closed. So am I doing something wrong or do they need to be set different?

You may be adjusting on the wrong stroke and both valves could still be closed and you would get way too much clearance. Watch the mate cyl, in other words, to adjust number one cyl you look at valves on number four cyl and the exhaust should just be closing and intake starting to open when you adjust number one. Stick your finger in spark plug hole and turn engine and when you feel compression turn to top dead center and adjust that cyl. Several different ways to end up with same results. On them old engines you can even adjust with engine running if you like. I don't.

yes adjust as pete says. you must be doing something out of sequence. just follow the firing order when adjusting vaves.

Did you get the valve end of the rocker arms ground? Sometimes they will wear leaving a lip on one edge & then it is hard to set them right. Use a piece of small hose in your ear & while it is running without the valve cover, you should be able to find the noisy one.

Bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke
then counting from the radiator adjust valves Nos 1-2-3 & 5. Then rotate the engine one full turn and adjust 4-6-7 & 8. Hope its not a wrist pin making the noise. Hal

I know that most wouldn't do this but I would pull the cover and just break the lock nuts loose and planing on getting real messy I would start it up and CAREFULLY take and gently grab or apply pressure to each rocker arm and you will find the noisy one really quickly. Then while the engine is still running try tightening up the adjuster and when you think you have it, take the screw driver off and let it run a minute and make sure. If it's now quiet shut the engine down and re run the clearances with a feeler gauge and lock them down. Then star it up again and see if it's holding. I have seen the bad lifters cause problems like this over the years. LarryT
