Cub Starter rebuild

Need to rebuild my starter on a 50 farmall cub, the gears are worn down and missing teeth. how difficult is it to rebuild the starter, and should I replace the ring on the flywheel? Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Happy New year.

There are a couple of answers. If all you are going to do is replace the gear, then not a big job.

If you take it a step further and replace brushes and bushing, the armature will need to be turned and the commutator undercut. Still not a huge effort, but if you have never worked on a starter or generator before, I would consider taking it to a auto electric shop, as this is best done on an armature lathe.

As far as the flywheel, take the starter out, and inspect the ring gear on the flywheel. You will have to make your own judgement on that, as the condition of the teeth will tell you whether or not that needs to be done. Often, you can just pop the ring gear off, turn it around and re-install. I never did one on a Cub, but it should work.

Start with the ring gear on the flywheel and replace that. When thats don your problems could go away.

pull starter then you can see fly wheeel took one of mine to a local and was rebuilt for 70.00
