Here is a picture of the two different styles. The original style is on top mounted on the armature.

The original style uses the spring to absorb the shock load when the drive engages the flywheel ring gear. Failures usually include bent or broken spring, bolts coming loose and rubbing on the case, or the gear wedging in the ring gear locking the starter and engine.

The newer style has uses rubber to better absorb the shock load. They also tend to not stick in the ring gear and lock the starter like the original style can do.

Be sure to replace the steel washers at both ends as per original style.
The sound will be a bit different when cranking but the results are great.

Where can I get the new style? Cost? I've stopped using the starter on my H because it jams alot. I'm pretty used to using the crank!

There are two washers that are not used with the new style drive. There is a thrust washer at each end of the armature. On the old style drive there are also two stop washers that limit the travel of the drive. they are not used with the new style drive.

I'm pretty sure you can get them here. Stieners has them and you can get them on Fleabay.
