Starting Tanks - Different or all the same???

Hey guys! The starting tank on my MD is rusted out. I have some cleaner and sealer but am not sure if it is going to get the job done. Wondering if all the IH starting tanks are the same or are they different? Meaning, can I get a good used starting tank from an M or even a H for my MD??? Or do I have to get one off another gas start diesel tractor? Thanks!!!

I think you can repair the tank with a tank repair kit. The one on my MD has been like that for years. There are two different starting tanks for the M. Up to serial number 24214, the parts info lists 48633DX. Serial 24215 and above the tank is 60685DAX. The tanks are the same for the MD and the M with distillate system. The tank for the H is different.

IH stopped using the original welded on bracket type tank not long after the stage 2 SM tractors started being built. Service tank was changed so that 2 bands and a bracket similiar to the air cleaner mounting was used. So you may find that type on some tractors that you can use with the bracket and bands. 400 and 450 D used the same mounting but the tank neck will stick above the hood more if used. Late SM and all SMTA used the same small tank retained by bands. Early M small tanks used a different outlet hole. MD tractors were built after the change. After the change the M and MD and a bunch of SM used the same weld on bracket tank.
