1951 Cub,.. skipping

We have a 1951 Cub that we plow with. Weatherman is predicting up to 20" of snow in next 2 days, so I just started it up & checked all fluids....It seems to have developed a skip...I had to "feather" the choke for about 30 seconds & had to run it about 5 min before it felt right. It has been converted to 12V, we use it yr round, it's maybe been sitting 2 months since fall chores were done...am I looking @ spark or fuel? The sediment bowl is clean & I used Stabil in the gas...points were new a year ago...thanks, from Maine

Sounds to me like it needs a good workout.
All of my Cubs run like that when they have set in the cold for a few days.

Did the engine run OK after warming up 5 minutes? If so the problem could be as simple as stale gas in the carb bowl.

The "reformulated" gas we're forced to buy now contains 10%+ ethanol. It works OK in fuel injected engines. But it deteriorates (become less volatile and absorbs water) quickly - even when treated with Stabil, etc. This causes starting/running problems in carbureted engines - especially if an engine sits idle for several weeks.

Solution is to keep fresh gas in the tank. Also when finished with the tractor shut off the fuel at the sediment bowl and let the engine run until it quits before shutting of the ignition This way no fuel is left in the carb bowl. Now you next time start it, the carb bowl will be filled with fresher fuel direct from the tank.

Another possibility - if the humidity was high when it gave you trouble - is carburetor icing. Solution is to thoroughly warm the engine before putting it to work. Also covering the radiator then shielding between the radiator and carburetor so warm air from the radiator flows back over the carb helps.

I thought you bought a V8 Scout last fall. I can't see the Cub doing much with this latest storm. It'll probably break too.

Good morning!

I did buy a Scout (good memory!)....I'm about to go plow w/it....We use the Cub to plow around the house/ around the barn...& keep it for walk-ways...

anyway...off to plow...
