Looking for quiet muffler

I recently bought a Stanley muffler for my Farmall H at at a Fleet/Farm store. It nothing but a fat straight pipe, with no baffles. My Dad bought a new H in 1947. If you stood 10 ft. away, you could hear it run. Factory muffler had baffles, just like a auto does. Anybody still make a quiet one???

Best deal for me, was the Muffler I purchased from my Case IH dealer. Its nothing special, by no means ugly, but works Excellent! Stanley mufflers are unbelievably loud and supposedly made to OEM standards. Invest in one of these and I believe you will be very satisfied. Makes my H sound very good.

Get one from Mark's Tractors. I am sure everyone on this forum will agree with me. I've heard them, and they are really nice!!! His contact info is 217-694-4735. He makes them to original IH blueprints so it has the correct baffleing and the correct size outlet, 1 3/4". I believe you'd be VERY happy with one of his mufflers.

I have a Bn with a Stanley muffler and it is loud. I thought that was normal. Then I bought an A with the original muffler and it is very quiet. I thought it was because the A is now a 12v and the bn is a 6 v. Then after looking at the two I was told all farmall with the original IHC muffler was very quiet. Like you I am now looking for an IHC or an after market one that is quiet also

The Stanley muffler for an H has a longer barrel and it does have a baffle. The muffler for an M is a shorter barrel and does NOT have a baffle. The farm stores carry only the short barrel muffler and label it as being for both the H and the M. Case-IH will have the correct longer barreled muffler for the H, or I can get one from A&I. There is a big difference in the sound level.

The only mufflers made to IH standards for appearance AND sound are made by Mark's Tractors and Carter and Gruenewald, a CaseIH dealer that contracts them out. There are some differences between the two. I don't have one from C&G, but the ones from Marks Tractors have the sound I remember from the 50's.

All the mufflers for my Farmalls I've obtained from Mark Wood in Illinois. He has original appearing and sounding mufflers for the letter series Farmalls. The old Stanleys (some are like new) that were on tractors I acquired are all stacked under the work bench. You have his contact information in a prior response. He is sometimes hard to reach as he farms full time as well as doing high valve Farmall restorations. Just keep trying to reach him on the phone, Hal.

I replaced Stanley mufflers on my SM and SH with "OEM style" mufflers from Carter & Gruenewald. Both tractors now run delightfully quietly but still retain the characteristic Farmall exhaust note.

However for the ultimate in quiet try a muffler from a early 70's era luxury car. I had an oval muffler salvaged from a Buick Wildcat on my SM for a while. It idled so quiet you could hear the fan belt chirp as it passed around the crank pulley.

You local CIH dealer can get you either a Stanley muffler (which I don't like, they're loud and the inlet/outlets rust almost instantly) or a Nelson muffler, the Nelson is the one you want.

The Nelson is just a better unit, they're quieter and the finish is much better.

Thank you all so much. Your replies have been very helpfull,& interesting. I, soon will be contacting Marks Tractors to order the proper muffler. I have a 30" straight pipe for the H. Put the muffler on, not much change in sound. Stanley should just call there's A staight pipe with a bulge in the middle.
