Oil Petcocks Leaking - Easy Fix

I went to check the oil level in one of my Super A tractors tonight, and before I messed with it, it DID NOT leak at all. I open the lower petcock and nothing comes out. After I tightened it back down, I noticed it is leaking now. I was sitting there working on the headlights, and noticed a puddle of oil about 10-15 minutes after I tightened the petcock. It is leaking and I need to stop it because it drips about every 8 seconds. THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!

You probably need to take it off and clean it good. Mine always drip after I close them because of the crud that's in the hole holding the oil back.

No, it won't. It'll drip any time the oil sloshes around in the pan, like when the tractor is moving.

(quoted from post at 07:19:51 12/24/10) It will stop dripping when your oil level is correct.

Not to mention he said the LOWER petcock (Why he "checked" the oil at that one we don't know. One could assume he checked the top one and there was no oil and then said, 'well, if it is within the bottom one it is good enough') If the oil lever were to stabalize at the lower petcock he would always be low.

I don't know where the fill plug on the A is, but why not get a dowel or tape measure or stick or something and make a dip stick. Then you can get rid of the petcocks.

The tractor is finished and painted, and I just want it to stop leaking. I thought it was weird that no oil came out of either petcock, but dripped pretty badly on the lower one once I closed it tight.

I noticed on mine that the tighter I closed it the worse it would leak. So now I turn it till it barely touches and viola! no more leaking! It might also help to turn it out as far as possible and work it some. Let some oil come out. If that doesn't help do as the others suggested and remove it and clean out good. It's just a metal to metal seal. At least mine are.

Might help to open it fully then spray some solvent back into it. I'd suggest doing that while draining the oil for a change.

Thanks guys, I finally got it to stop leaking. I don't know how, but it did. It could have just leaked down just past the hole too.

Thanks Ted. I don't know much about the letter series tractors. My first one was a 460. Guess I would use the little finger in the top hole and feel for oil. I'd probably always worry that the petcocks would vibrate open so I'd use bullplugs.

The oil fill is in the valve cover, you can't get a "stick" to the pan from there. First tractors (1950) I ever drove had petcocks, mine still do with the exception of my 460, I have no objection to them.
