why does my 986 tractors make the oil black in a very short time after i change it & it starts to blowby shortly after magor overhual 750 hours or so? Tractor is a stock hp farm tractor, oil & filters changed at 100 hours. Is this normal? 15w40 CI-4

Thats normal to have a little blow by on those engines and the oil turns black in a short time but that doesnt mean its no good its a diesel. I find if you work the engine it will burn a quart in 10 hours under a good load even when the tractor was new. I bought a 986 and a 686 brand new, one in 1977 and one in 1981.

I don't know about the blackening as it takes 30 or more hours after a change to see significant change in mine. Are the rubbers in the air delivery system in good condition (not cracked) and clamps are tight? No potential holes any place? My 986 breathes noticeably but I have not seen any problems develop relative to it.
Like the other fellow said you want to be checking that oil on a daily basis. My 986 has been a good strong tractor and now is in the neighborhood of 4650 hours. Need to replace the park pawl in the next few months.

HY086 Don't use the 15w40 and get some IH #1 engine DY 10 or 30. 30 for hot weather, in cold weather you can mix the 10 &30. It will stop the black stuf from coming out the exhaust.

My 1486 and both 1466 do the same thing. I have run 15-40 rotella oil for many years. They all start to turn black after about ten hours after a oil change and tractors have some blow by right after you start them . I usually have to add two to four quarts of oil in between oil changes and change oil in all my IH tractors 100 - 120 hrs.

Why not use the 15w-40? What's wrong with it? That's what most tractors get used in them. We had some blow-by in a couple 1066s and switched from CIH oil to Rotella and cleared it up in the one.

The other had the wrong valve guides and seals. Found out when it broke a valve off that it had three different guides in it. Some job that dealer did o the rebuild.

i would find this to be normall most of the trucks i work on and tractors i work on all do this you start it to check for leaks turn it off check the oil and its black - no big deal this is actually good - it means the oil is doing its job and suspending the soot and not letting it settle into corners etc in the block -

my 99 powerstroke for some reason no matter what oil i use in it takes 1000mi to turn black why i dont know but its been that way since ive owned it i guess it just depends on the engine etc
