Farmall A cast centers continued

I was reading the posting about cast and steel centers a few pages back. The rear centers on my 1939 A are both steel as far as I can see. They look and ring the same. Should I be looking for a cast center? I'm not planning on doing any side hill work or plowing.

I have a B that was narrowed up at some point in its life to near what an A is by removing the right side axle extension. Both rear wheels are tin. The previous owner (neighbor and friend) was mowing his ditches with it one summer and it tipped over. Narrow front B, wrong wheel centers, ..... He said he was going along and it slowly rolled up on its side. Amazingly enough, nothing was hurt except for the air inlet tube and the light bracket on that side. The light wasn't hurt, the hood, grill, etc all are perfect. He just got lucky. Said he stepped of of it as it was going over.

Now that I own it and am fixing it up, I bought the axle extension, good air cleaner, and both cast centers/wheel weights. It will be nice soon. Good story to tell about. Messing around with engineering is a recipe for disaster.

A '39 A would have left the factory with 2 stamped steel wheel disks. The cast right wheel wasn't added until later. There was a field upgrade package available hat included the wheel disk and axle.

Once the heavy wheel was available, they made it an option on the B.

Jim is right. Farmall A`s up to serial # 5563 came with steel centers on both sides.

Early 1939 A's were equipped with two steel wheels. Cast wheel on right side was introduced in late 39 production and was standard on all A after its introduction and was offered for retrofit on the early 39 A's. Yours must be an early 39 or either the wheels have been changed over the years.

Well, thank you for all the replies. I just got back from looking at Christmas lights. We took the golf cart and rode around for an hour and a half. Of course, I'm in Florida and not in Minnesota or some other cold spot!

My tractor must be original wheels if what you say is true. And I have no reason to doubt anyone! I have Ser. No. 1482. That's number 982 off the line, so it's pretty early. Thanks for the information and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Enar, My A was built 8 tractors before yours. I have serial # 1474.It has the 2 rear steel centers also. I see you have a 3 spoke steering wheel on yours. Was that on your tractor when you got it? I have a 2 spoke steering wheel on mine-same as what`s shown in the early sales literature and just curious what a tractor with a close serial # to mine had on it. I`ve not seen another with the 2 spoke at any shows I`ve been to.Could be most of them got swapped out over the years as it seems somewhat flimsy. You did a real fine job of restoring your A. She`s a beauty.Mark

Hi Mark,

The steering wheel is original as far as I know. I just learned
about the two spoke wheel a week or so ago. Funny how it's
come up again. I would think it is original too. It seemed to be
right. I had it off and restored it myself. It had cracks in it like
they all do. I filled them in with a generous dose of red putty
and then sanded it down and painted it. Came out real nice if I
do say so myself.

Do you know of any lower numbers out there? I wonder what
happened to 501??

We have 2 B s. The 1946 model has cast centers on both sides .
Other one, serial * 50169 has pressed steel on both sides.
I am 2nd owner of the 46, but do not know any history on either tractor.
