Farmall H - Weak Hydraulic Power

I have a 1944 Farmall H with a loader. Raising the loader is extremely slow, and with a snow load in the bucket it barely creeps up, if at all. What could be my problem. I was informed that it is possible that the previous owner used synthetic hydraulic fluid. It leaves an orange-ish coloring in the snow. Will changing this fluid help or will warming up the tractor help? I just purchased this tractor (private party) to plow my driveway and would like to troubleshoot it as much as possible before having to bring it in somewhere. I'd appreciate your advice. Thanks.

It could be the fluid, but more then likley the pump its self or one of the valves inside is worn, broken or stuck. H belly pumps are cheap and easy to come by, you should be able to get one for under a 100 bucks.

The lift on my M was never something to write home about for lifting and an IH mechanic suggested using heavier oil. Book calls for 30 wt but he suggested going up to 40 wt. I've found if you use hydraulic oil and use it a lot like with plowing if the system gets hot from use then the thin oil won't work. Trying a different oil doesn't cost much.

if it is leaving a trail, you have a leak. fix that, as loss of fluid means loss of pressure. 800 psi needs all the help it can get.

First thing is to check/change the filter and clean any screens. What kind of noises does it make such as a high pitched whine? Are you waiting till it gets to operating temperature? Does the sound change when it warms up?

A steadily leaking hydraulic system kills the grass. If you have any artistic ability, drive it around the farmyard and write some kind of design or write your name.
