Looking for information on Farmall M casting dates and how to read them.
Specifically for a 1952 M front bolster.
 
Most built at that time have the year as a number on the lower bolster. 3-12 52 would be the 3rd month, day 12, year 52. Tractor could have a bolster with a 51 or 52 year. Date is when the part was cast, not when it was installed on a tractor. Other castings could have a letter in place of the year number. X= 1952, U or W = 1951.

One more question on the front bolster.
Some bolsters have a small "bump out" on the front of the casting (just below the front grease zerk)
and some do not. Is this related to the year of the tractor or something else?
 
Only the early models didn't have the bump out.
Without looking it up I'm guessing 1939 and part of 1940. If you have one without the bump out on a 52 model its not original.
 
They got broken from time to time but I would say they had a low fail rate. Just to make sure, you do mean the upper bolster, and the bump out or not is at the bottom front center of the upper bolster. Did you find a date code on the upper bolster? Lots are on the front of the right post (as sitting in seat) going up to the steering gear box.
Are you sure the tractor is a 52 model?
 
Looked at my notes, Early 41 was the end of the smooth front bolsters. All I can tell you is a 52 model should have a bolster with a casting # of 9141DC. 9141DC was used on gasoline tractors from a little after the mid forties and on SM tractors up to the SMTA. Changed to DD for SMTA.

Should find the casting # on the center front just below gear compartment. When looking a diesel bolster will look the same, but there not. Diesel will be cast # 9131 followed by a letter or letters. 9131DD is the DD I mentioned in the other post. They came on SMTA through 450 gas or diesel. You can tell them by the different shape.
