if its a super and a 9 series, it must be a diesel, swd-9. the serial number is a 1953. if its a wr-9-s, 550 is the first of the 1954 production.

correction on the swd-9, it should be super wdr-9 for the rice tractor, still a 1953. still would be diesel.

Guy Fay's IH Tractor Data Book, p 164

1953 501-549
1954 550-721
1955 722-754
1956 755-770
1957 771-779
Updike lists 755-779 in 1956

If you don't want it, sell it to me!

Being the first one made for the year .... its more valuable to a collector then the rest. What condition its in and what you will do with it depends on if its worth keeping or not

shes rough. no radiator, hood, grill. engine is stuck. bad fenders. i have been around antique tractors all my life but have never had a serial number of any importance. does being the first make it that much more collectable?

To me, not that much. To two dudes at an auction, you will hope so if you are selling it!
I would still keep it. They are pretty sweet old pigs. You will throw A TON of money at it, but you will have a sweet machine when you are done.

It depends on your area and the buyer. If it were in my possession i would keep it, Those tractors never seem to be around my area and the low serial # make it very valuable here in running condition. However your usually not in this hobby to make money and it sounds like you need a list of parts.

the decision is yours ..... i would keep it if it were me

I forgot, I wouldn't scrap it if I did want to get rid of it. Put it on the classifieds here and you will certainly get more than scrap price for it.
