'48 H Pushrod Cover leaking

I put a new gasket on it when I rebuilt it and it
is leaking. It"s a slow leak. I was very thorough
at cleaning the surfaces of both the cover and the
engine and careful to get everything lined up when
I assembled it.

Hi, Chad.

Sometimes on lids and covers the gasket will slip out of position (toward the inside or the outside) when the fasteners are tightened. To prevent this, I use a little sealer (typically Permatex #2) to install the gasket in the cover the day before. I put on just enough sealer that I'm confident there won't be any leaks, then put 5 or 10 pounds of weight on the assembly and let it set up overnight. The next day I install the lid and gasket as a unit, and the gasket behaves itself nicely. I sort of play it by ear as to whether to use any more sealer at that point.

Now this sounds counterproductive but one thing I learned while working on army vehicles is to put a very thin coating of grease on the gasket. That would be AFTER using Permatex on one side to glue the gasket to the cover. Can't remember ever having a leak. I guess the grease allows the gasket to 'flow' into the nooks and crannies.
