Hey guys,

I have been ranting about my super a having an antifreezle leak from the head. There is no antifreeze in the oil but i am wondering how to know if it is leaking into the cylinder sleeves? Do you think it could be. I have no idea what to expect. I almost want to leave the leak alone as long as it isnt getting into the sleeves or the oil pan.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Cole

If you pull the spark plugs you might find one rusty. That would be a perfect sign that some is getting into the cylinder.

A few years ago, I had a Farmall A that was leaking antifreeze from the head like you have described. I really didn't want to rip it all apart and since the radiator had been redone a few months prior to the leak developing and since I was not gettng antifreeze in the oil, I took my father's advise which was, "Throw a can of Bars Leak into the radiator and see what happens". I did, following the instructions on the container and the problem went away. Have used the tractor for about two years since then with no leaks or problems. Just my two cents. LOL.

If its getting into the combustion chamber it could be going out the muffler in the form of white smoke. When you let it idle for a bit and then rev it up does it blow a white cloud? Or does it constantly blow a little white smoke?

Does it have an intermittan miss?

Retorque the head bolts to 80 ft-lb while the engine is warm. Reset the valve clearance and see if your leak goes away. I am assuming the leak is to the outside, visible on the engine block. If you don't have white smoke and you don't have water in the engine oil, and the leak is just a seep, retorqueing the head bolts may take care of it. If the sleeve seals are leaking, you will have coolant in the oil.

It does not miss at all and runs very smooth. I keep it in the heated shop, and everytime i start it and run it, there is no white smoke whatsoever.

No rust on any spark plugs. They seem to e buring ver well with little or no soot and a little bit of light brown coloration on two of them.

If I fill my S A up with water I lose some as soon as it warms up, It finds its own level.Mine is about 1 1/2 in below the neck

Look closely at the insulators that are not brown. Can you see a faint green tint on the ceramic ? If so, antifreeze is getting into the combustion chambers. Which two plugs are they ?

I'd retorque the head before tearing it apart.

I would expect that plugs 1 and 4 would be the lightest. Introducing a little water to the intake will clean the carbon out of a cylinder and off the plugs. The green tint would be very faint unless you have run it for a while. On a car it is pretty light.

I'd still retorque the head, and add a bottle of Barr's Leak. It is cheap, easy, and could work. If it doesn't, the cost is low and the risk is nil.
