T/A in forward position-is that direct drive? Other ?'s

I'm supposed to go look at an 886 and the guy says the the t/a lever is stuck in the forward position and the throttle cable is broke. Is the forward position direct drive? Would it hurt to run the tractor if the t/a is in fact bad? We've run a 400 with a bad t/a for years with no problems but I don't know about a 886. I'm assuming the throttle cable is fairly easy to replace?

We ran my cousin's 886 like this for years. You don't need a t/a unless you are pulling a moldboard plow. Forward is high range direct drive. Check the engine oil and antifreeze carefully as internal corrosion from electrolysis is a problem with this series tractor.

886 vs 400, very different in TA designs.

A 400 will run forever with the TA out on the low side.

If the TA is out on the low side of an 886, it's only a matter of time before it stops moving altogether.

What do they mean by the TA lever is "stuck?" Stuck as in it won't move? Stuck as in no matter where you put the lever it stays in high?

The TA could be perfectly fine, but somehow the lever is rusted up?

It sounds like this tractor may be in poor condition.

There are a jillion hydraulic TA's running with low side out for years. It all depends on what is causing the TA to be out. If worn out sprag and pressures are good, including lube pressure you won't hurt a thing. On the other hand if it failed because of internal leakages, accompanied by low lube pressure you would be taking a chance running in direct only. Not likely though. Far as ta being stuck, those cables stick and break off just like throttle cables. You can always unhook linkage at the selector spool and pull spool up to check for low ta drive.

Other than the cable that Pete mentioned another place they can be stuck is the detent roller on the handle under the dash. There is a needle bearing that can replace the roller for those that are to hard to operate.
