Farmall A final drive

I have an A with a broken left final drive. I have a parts tractor but it only has the right final drive. I realize one side has a longer axle shaft. If I swap the axle shaft can I use the right drive on the left side? All the mounting holes look symnetrical to me. Thanks
Greg

I have had mine off, the castings have different part numbers, I don't think they are the same as you would have to turn the right one backwards to mount it on the left side. And as noted even if they are symetrical, the hole for mounting one of the brake pins would be in the wrong place. Could be that www.external_link may have used ones. Put the correct part number in the search box. Otherwise some salvage yard would have one. If not too bad a GOOD welder can fix it.

Is your left side axel housing damaged as well? I think CNKS is right about the casting numbers being different on the housings, Case IH part number is different left to right side housings for sure.
But, because the brake on the left side is inboard, it may work. Make sure you can end up with two functioning brakes.

Greg, I was thinking of a Farmall B when I asked about the "left axel housing", so disregard that.
I believe the pin for the brake band is on the transmission on the left side. But the brake band needs to lead out through a recess on the final drive, the right side final may not have that. What part of the country are you in?
