Low/High charging question with 6 volt

Hey guys, from reading a previous post about the 6 volt charging system with the Low and high selector on the light switch. I. Have a Super A that when running at reasonable throttle, shows a Discharge on the ammwter when switched to Low charge. When switched to High charge, the ammeter shows it charging at about 5 to 6 amps. Is this system working properly? It is the 6 volt system. Thanks.

That sounds a little low. If it is a 3 brush generator , set the movable brush closer to the other brush. Make sure both belts are tight enough first. High charge should be about 10 amps.

When switched to the LOW charge position a resistor is placed in the Field circuit between the Field terminal and chassis ground. If this circuit is open, it could cause your indication.
On the back of the light switch you will probably find two resistances. One a coil of wire and another wire wound resistor. If I remember correctly the wire coil is for headlight dimming and the wire wound resistor is the Field Resistor.
You need to make sure the light switch body is grounded. In the HIGH charge position the generator Field terminal is grounded through the light switch. In LOW charge position The Field terminal is grounded by the light switch through the Field resistor.

That one, you'll want the Owner's Manual in front of you to check things out as you go along. Deatiled instructions are there.

If you have the third brush, many if not most do, it is mounted on a movable bracket between the two main brushes. Moving it in the direction of generator rotation increases output.

I think I agree with K Mo.

On the back of the switch is a bigger wire of open coil thats the light dim resistor and theres one of smaller wire wound around a flat piece thats the field circuit resistor. It should be around 3 ohms but if its open/bad she wont charge in the Low charge switch position.

The switch must be grounded ok as needed otherwise she wont charge at all.

If that resistor is bad/open you can just replace/repair it or the whole switch. You may also look at the switches connections as some may be bad/corroded.

The wire up from FLD on the genny goes to that switch and gets its ground, its direct to ground in hich charge but in Lo it passes thru that resistir then to ground.

CHECK FOR A BAD/OPEN FIELD RESISITR ON BACK OF SWITCH AND CHECK SWITCH CONNECTIONS
