IH 460 Utility Diesel

Hello IH people. I am sort of a dyed in the wool White Cockshutt person. However, do to a trade I now have a 460 IH diesel utility Serial number M 1480 SY with the rework triangle after the serial number. I am not sure about the M in front of the S-N as it not very clear at all.
It has some issues. I was told by the previous owner that he did some work to the engine as it was left outside where water got in the exhaust. He got the head done over and changed the bottom bearings. He went to move it aroung and could not get it into gear. He thought something was wrong with the TA. Now it is at my place, i crawled underneath and took off the inspection plate under the clutch. The release bearing does not even contac the clutch fingers at all with the clutch pedal down. The fingers are so far forward the release bearing would hit the LPTO spline coupling before traviling to far even if the release bearing was set to be farther forward. My son an dI pulled it to move it yesterday. I tried it in 4th gear, but the wheels justed dragged. In enytral it pulls fine.
So tha tells me the cluth is engaged, all else being ok.
No the questions start. Is it possible that teh cluch disk could be in backwards? Is so, would it engage like it has? I would think it would not engage at all then as the friction material would be held away from the flywheel and the presure plate. Anyone of you good IH people ever seen anything like this? My next move is to set the fingers through the inspection hole to about 1/16" from the releas bearing and see if that releases it. Nothing to loose I guess.
BTW it is just smart how IH linked the cluth and TA so when you shift gears, you were always in underdrive. Oliver could have learned from that I think.

I can't fully answer your question, but -- Adjust the clutch first, then the TA -- procedure is rather complicated, but you want the TA clutch to begin releasing shortly after the main clutch begins to release. You can see that happen by removing the cover plate over the TA clutch. I don't think it is possible to install the plate in backwards. The "ribs", currently hidden by the pressure plate are supposed to face the rear. You may be able remove the bolts and slide the plate back to check, not sure on that. Although I have installed a new main clutch and adjusted the TA, due to slop in the main and TA linkage, I have never been able to get my 460 HU to shift without gear clash with the oil hot. Shifts pretty good when cold. On mine, when pushing the clutch in, the engine has to be at low idle for an excess of 10 seconds to avoid gear clash. While I have tried to fix the linkage, there could be some drag on the pilot bearing, also. The triangle indicates the trans/rear end has been upgraded. Too much HP for the bearings etc in the 460/560 was the beginning of the demise of IH.
