What is the right color.

I have been searching for the correct red and white for my 1958 340 row crop. The white doesn't seem white, it's almost a cream. I think the red is supposed to be a lighter red than IH 2150. I have looked at numerous sites and don't know which is correct. I lack the knowledge and experience in that area. Please help!

In 1958 IH used IH 201, good luck finding it. 2150 appeared in 1961. I doubt if I have ever seen 201, but I also doubt if it is much different from 2150. It may or may not be too light. I read a lot about a "dark" red. I am not sure there ever was one. Also, it is likely next to impossible to find the color that came on the tractor as the EPA, etc has mandated that certain "toxic" elements such as lead be removed resulting in a change in the color. To my eyes 2150 has an orange tint, several others that have responded to that statement say they don't see any, others agree. Also you can have 2150 mixed to DuPont/PPG, etc specifications and adjust the toners to suit you -- don't expect it to work the first time. The correct white for your tractor is IH 901 (PPG 8665 I think, IH does not sell it anymore) I do not know if it is close to the original color, it looks fine to me. It will have a slight greenish yellow tint to my eyes, looks better sprayed on than in the can.

Editing feature is not working on this forum--I misread your post. You are the first I have heard say 2150 was too dark -- the others say too light. Otherwise my post is the same.

The white is more of a cream. Other wise the contrast is so stark it hurts. It is listed as IH cream at my NAPA dealers where I by mine or the Ditzler # is 8655 polar wt. LarryT

Was 2150 aslso used on the early 140's? I thought that the color looked more brown or orange. I have a 1962 140 that I have been struggling wih the color.

I used PPG's paint code 71310 on this Troy Bilt tiller. Hal

I believe the PPG 8665 is correct, IH 901 crosses to that color. It is supposed to be an off white that does resemble cream. I don't know what polar white is -- It is not IH 901. Not familiar with Martin Senour/NAPA, though.

In 1962, IH used 2150, but as I mentioned, the ORIGINAL color is hard to come by. I just changed the toners slightly and have since gotten used to it. I truly believe that the old colors simply do not exist anymore, and that the current ones are "good enough". There is also some difference in the mixing of different batches. I have at least two colors of PPG 71310, the cross from 2150.

If the 2150 has an orange tint to it, that means you didn't put enough on to achieve full coverage. It will get darker the more coats you apply.

Unfortunately, the true original color is lost forever. 50-year-old samples have faded. Photographs of the time do not depict the color accurately. The best you can do is buy the paint from the CaseIH dealer... Plausible deniability.
