correct bearing in H steering shaft?

I am trying to eliminate the last of the wobbles in the steering of my H Farmall. I was told by someone that the bearing on the end of the worm gear/steering shaft should be #ST-225.

The bearing in my tractor is a #ST-225-B (IHC made in USA). Are the two bearings the same? I have a small amount of play between the worm and sector to get rid of. Worm, sector and bushings are new, but some play still remains.

Thanks for your help.

I think the ST225B is OK. My parts CD says ST225 BT. For what it's worth, the M and H have the same bearing on the worm shaft. If there is any play at all in the worm shaft bearing, you should replace it as it is cheap and any play results in play in the steering. The bearing inner race must be clamped tight to the shoulder on the shaft with the castle nut on the end of the shaft. The outer race of the bearing has to be clamped tight in the steering box by the big hex plug on the front of the steering box. I've had to put a machine washer in there sometimes to get the plug to clamp the outer race. If you use a washer just make sure that it contacts only the plug and the outer bearing race.

IH originaly used a bearing that would better handle the forward and rearward thrust on the shaft. Can't remember all the numbers but think the 225 and 225 B are cheaper ones. Correct bearing will be $75 to $100. Most have a cheaper one installed. Think I used a pilot bearing from a SM with the shield removed in some. $10 to $20.

If any one is interested here is a link that crosses about every bearing made. It is very long. I have used it a few times rather than pay $$ for IH bearings. The SKF that my dealer sells is the same quality. No search function, you have to page down until you find the IH numbers. Numbers are not by manufacturer, but are alphabetical. I think it's 400+ pages in a PDF file. There is also a seal list -- SKF bought Chicago Rawhide.

Don't think you get the same bearing Originaly called for. Shows ST225, st225A, st225AT, st 225B, st225BXS5 and ST225Y as crossing to there same number. IH changed the numbers some but I remember ST225Y was one number used and it wasn't originaly the same as a st225. Same size yes. Unless the tractor is used all the time any bearing will probably do. Lots of tractors have the 225 and 225B that was used in the H water pumps.

225 or what 225 crosses to is the important number, that means it fits. BUT, the suffixes cover things like one side being shielded, etc, perhaps the replacement could be a sealed bearing in place of the original. Such things may or may not effect the proper lubrication, etc. I have not gotten that deep into the charts. I replaced all the bearings in my Super A transmission and final drive. The dealer crossed most of them before I found the charts. They were identical as far as I can tell. I have not yet studied what all the suffixes mean, they are in the introduction to the charts. I will keep that in mind. There was one seal that I got from the charts, using the cross from the IH number. I messed it up installing it, so I ordered one from CaseIH, which was actually cheaper (unusual). It appeared to be a heavier duty seal also.

I should have checked before posting. IH did change the bearing but not on all. Earlier models used bearings st208, 10701D which st 225 would work for. st208,A and B were used as a clutch pilot bearing also. Later ST225Y, AT and BT were used, also IH C-225-Z. All the above bearings are unshielded. ST 544 is a sealed pilot bearing the same size. Think the bearing used now to replace ST225BT is ST678. If you look at the price of ST678 compared to some of the other bearings the same size, Its a better quality or a rip off.

Haas has it right. That's the first thing install on any Farmall I buy. Couple of shims for thatfront cap to bearing area. And then snug the cap down TIGHT.

This came up many times in my 47 years at IH,CASE-IH,CNH dealers, ST225 is a plain ball brg, ST225BT just variation, it will usually make the computer sub to ST678, from IH the good bearing but pricey, it was a combination thrust & radial load bearing that was recommended if the customer wanted to use the tractor for heavy front loads like a loader. Its the thrust load that kills the standard, we just told the customer to decide what he wanted.
