IH 2424 oil capacity question

I am pretty sure that according to my manual that it takes 17 gallons in the transmission since I have the front mounted pump, power steering & 3pt. The manual says 6 inches below the filler cap is the correct level.
Can someone confirm this for sure?

Also have a leak coming from the 3pt valve, I am hoping there is just a bad o-ring.
The pic does not show the valve since it is up front. Looks like 2 bolts to remove the valve.

ok randy, where''d ya get the 2424???? inquiring minds need to know. hows the h doing? pics of the 2424????

Well Glenster I hate to admit it, but I went and looked at this thing not knowing what to expect. Sitting outside covered with junk, not running but not stuck, asked what he wanted for it thinking I really did not need another tractor since I have 3 H's that need to be redone.
So for $250 I brought it home ; )

First thing I dragged it the shop, not easy with no steering to speak of, bought a battery and made new cables, cranked it over a few times, which made me smile.

Inside the gas tank was full of crud and rust, pulled the carb and cleaned the rust and crud out. by passed the gas tank and let the fuel pump suck gas from a gas can, got good flow.

Tried to start it, no go, pulled the cap off and it was full of rust and points rusted shut. Got new parts and tried to start it again. no go, got spark but no fuel. electric shut off valve on the carb was not working, took a while but finally figured out the key switch was bad.

Got it running and it sounds good and does not smoke, now in the process of fixing lots of hydraulic leaks.

H, Randy -

I checked out your link to more pics. Can't wait to see that thing scooping a big load of dirt. Good luck.

I'm still waiting for my service manual to show up so I can get those differential cages out. I changed focus to some other areas, but anxious to get back to the main reason I tore the whole thing apart.

just looking at your pics again and have a question.
I see the PTO shaft running through your differential... same set up as my 434. If I reach in and try to wiggle the front end of that shaft (with PTO lever disengaged), I get all kinds of play... like 1/8" to 3/16". I pulled the shaft out and see there is just a pin on one shaft fitting into a hole on the other - steel on steel. no bearing, no bushing, etc.
With PTO lever engaged, the collar lines up the shafts and all play is gone.

With PTO disengaged, do you feel a lot of play in the front of the shaft?

It seems like a bad design... should keep the PTO engaged as much as possible to minimize the steel on steel rotation between the shafts.

Thanks Owen!!

Troy, I uploaded some more pics to my link above.
Had to press out the bearing on the diff cage.
Took a pick of the pto shaft and there is a bushing in mine.
I also had no large o-rings on either differential cage so I can see why it was leaking. Need to find a source for those.

Randy

I see from your pictures that your tractor has the forward and reverse drive attachment. Reverse is 26% faster than the forward gears. I bet it will really move out in 4 high reverse!

Randy - checked out those pics and thanks for sending.
Noted you had to press the bearing out of that diff cage... you have the right equipment for it... nice set up.
Noted the bushing on the PTO. I have to take a closer look at mine. Yours looks to be in good shape.
Regarding o-rings, maybe you have a different cage design?? I see no gland for o-ring on mine. I just have a flat gasket... and my gasket was compromised - I think the root cause.

I still can't figure out how to get the differential apart. From your picture 1218101055a, I removed the monster spur gear on the axle. then I start to slide the cage out on the right side (leaving left side fully assembled still). the right cage makes it most of the way out, but the bull pinion shaft will not release from the differential. What did you have to do to get the bull pinion shaft free? (Manual has not showed up yet).

Hey Troy, the only hard part I had was trying to get the bull gear out of the way of the right side. Other than that both cages slid right out. I can't figure out what could be keeping yours from coming out. If the splined shaft has moved away from the differential, there should be nothing else holding it.

You have both bull gears out right? Will the left side come out?
You can go to CASEIH.com and look up a parts breakdown that might show you something.

I just looked at the parts breakdown for the 434 and could not find a gasket or oring. All it shows are the shims, that's strange.

Is the differential lock shaft holding you up?

Randy

Randy-
yes, diff lock shaft was holding me up. got my service manual, pushed the sleeve back to expose the circlip, and you know the story from there. All apart now.

The cup for the right hand tapered roller bearing is shot. I posted an inquiry about it today on the forum. Looking for a less expensive source... merricks.com has one for $61. Then need to get a shop to press old out and new it, then finally back together. How are you doing?
-Troy

Glad to hear you got it out!!
Mine is all back together and I think all the leaks are fixed!!
Waiting for rear wheels & tires since they were rusted through. Still working on the wiring and a few hydraulic hoses need to be replaced. Last thing is to get the bucket arm repaired and I will be done I hope :D
