How many SMTA were made?

Hey guys! I know the SMTA was only made in 1954 but how many of them were made? Also, what is the correct casting code for a SMTA? Thanks!!!

Matt

The correct code for a SMTA is "Z", but be careful, because some of the early 400s also had that same "Z" casting code, and I suspect that more than a few early 400s have been magically transformed into a SMTA.

Oh not as "rare" as I thought they were. Thanks for the info...hopefully I will have a copy of Guy Fays' book under the tree from my fiance this year! :)

Actually the Stage II Super H is more rare, and currently they seem to be the one collectors are looking for. I recently saw one in field condition, no fenders, no overhaul go for 3800 and it was not a relative who bought it.

I tried looking for my post that listed all the casting codes on SMTA 60177. It was built on the first or second day of production in Feb 1954. I couldn't find the thread,

Anyway, all the SMTA specific parts were cast after Jan 1, 1954. Half of the other parts were cast prior to that. Some going back to July 1953. The oil reservoir even has a 1952 code of "Y".

If using codes for evidence, they are only interesting if they post-date the presumed date of the tractor's assembly. That means the part has been replaced with a later mfdg part.

I found it interesting that the Electrall gearbox on my F-400 (#520) was cast six months after the tractor was built. I had assumed IH shipped that new model, with the Electrall installed, as a demonstrator. It appears that it was dealer installed after the NorthEast experienced two devastating hurricanes in the summer of 1955 (Carol and Diane). I remember we spent half the summer without lights.

Correction:

"The oil reservoir even has a 1952 code of "Y" "

should be:

The oil reservoir even has a 1952 code of "X". One of these days I'll master the alphabet. It's a shame that the edit feature has been disabled on modern view.

Dave, hope you don't mind me giving another answer. Think the number you posted is for the combined total of regular SM and SMTA built from 11-1-53 to the end of SMTA production.
SMTA serial numbers went from 60001 to 83523. If they built a SMTA tractor for every number in between it wouldn't add up to the 26924.

No, I don't mind at all! Never have been and never will be the last word on any of this stuff! :)

The number I gave is what I wrote down long ago on the inside cover of my manual as being total production on this model. It is the same as listed in Fay's tractor data book. Would be interested to know if I have wrong info. Give me a better number and I will look for my white-out.

Wish I could say for certain what the exact amount is. Best I can say is probably less than 24000 SMTA of all types were sold.
