460 snow blower?

Hi all,

Just wondering your opinion of a 460 running a three point snow blower? I have a 460 with a three point, but was wondering if it would be an okay match with a snow blower. TA works fine, would that be bad for it to run with TA to slow reverse ground speed?

I am new to the Farmall family and was wondering your opinions.

Thanks, have a great day!
Erik

I do know when you are snow blowing you need to go REALLY slow (obviously in reverse).
Not sure about long term operation of TA in low reverse.

Erik MN; you should have the power. I peeked in the 'Implement Photos' section and there is a photo of an 8N powering a snowblower. The operation of it will however, depend on: the size of the blower; moisture quantity of the snow; tire tread; tubes loaded and/or wheel weights and if you have chains. I've had the fluid removed/new tubes and been using my Farmall 460 with eight foot fast-hitch blade to move two storms of six and nine and a half inches of the wonderful snow. The tread is good/no chains and I've got the three pins placed for the blade to float. Good luck and put the 'longies' on!

We have run a 6.5' lucknow blower on a 584 for years, you'll never stall the tractor, but you have to clutch and let the blower catch up with the snow it starts to push..you should be just fine with a smaller blower. My first snow removal was an open frame snow thrower on a B Allis, and it worked reasonably well.

Unless you plan on blowing out miles and miles of road, you are not going to "hurt" the TA by running in reverse.

Even with the TA engaged, reverse might not be slow enough for blowing heavy snow.

Dad says that back in the 60's they ran ONE tire chain on the blower tractor, so one wheel would spin and the other could be used to "inch" the blower into the snow by tapping the brake.

Of course that trick only works if the ground's frozen. If not you're digging a hole to China, and probably going to get stuck.

If you have an 'X' suffix in the tractor serial number, that means a high speed low and reverse. That would not be suitable for snowblowing.

I think there a first gear gearset that is even lower than the standard 460 ratios. For instance, my 504 is very slow in first and reverse. Those gears should swap but I won't guarantee that without doing the research.

If you find that you want to go slower, I'll let you "walk your fingers" through the Caseih parts site. Click below.

Open station tractor and blowing snow is no fun. You end up looking like a snowman real quick. As far as the TA, it doesn't care if you are in reverse or forward gears, it is in front of the transmition and doesn't know the differance. RichH

Hey, Wardner. I'm surprised that you don't have a tractor equipped with front 3-point & one of your gear boxes rigged to put a PTO out the front to power the blower.
