Tore into our Super M today and found out that the head was cracked in two different spots on the number 1 and 4 cylinder. Have spent time looking for a different one on the internet but am having no luck. Just wondering if anybody has ideas where to get one and what the cost of it is going to be. Thanks

Thay are out there....might want to try Steek Wheel Ranch...just be sure you get the 8060 casting. A lot of guys will try to sell you a head from an early M. Price?....I usually get 250 for a decent takeoff from a running tractor. You can figure substantailly more for a head that has been gone through.

You might be better off to just bite the bullet and send it off to these guys and have it fixed.

I will bet that the great majority of them out there are cracked. Usually they can be welded up and will work fine. Have seen a lot pulled that were cracked and were running fine with no symptons of leak.

How soon do you need it? I have a Super that was a rescue, actually restorable, but got water in one cylinder, and is missing just enough stuff that it might be better to part it out- plus I can use a few parts from it on my two SMD's. If I was to sell it, it would be magged/fresh valve job first

It's not uncommon for those heads to crack. Guy that works on my tractor heads said he has never seen an M head that didn't have at least 2 cracks in it. A good auto machine shop should be able to weld your head cheaper than you can buy another one.

Sene, Put an add on the YT classifiyed. I put on an add looking for 8086 head and had 3 calls in 2 days. One head was just redone but the tractor through a rod through the block. So I got it. Quick and cheep. oldiron29

Send it where Rusty says. I had one done there and when I got it back it was much better than new.

Thanks for the replies. had a machine shop look at it and its too far gone to try and plug it the cracks go way down into the valve seats and he didnt think it would hold. the original problem was water in the oil and its now led to this. Will try them in the AM.

Stitching will take care of those.

Welding is generally done by yahoos who have no idea what they are doing. Bubble gum applied under very high pressure is more effective.

It's still cheaper to just buy someones take off head.

Some yahooos actually know how to weld most don"t...I have one that was welded over 30 years ago that is holding and tractor did serious work for several years after it was welded.

This place is about 1.5 hours north of you on Hwy 77 in Lyons NE

I get alot of parts there and so do the other IH collectors in my family.

Good Luck!
