Farmall H - power problem in 5th gear

My 1942 H (kerosene) has developed a strange problem (it was never that good to pull on hills in 5th gear) the problem is intermittant but usually occurs after maybe 10 - 15 minutes driving on the road, the engine makes a popping soundand dies right down and stalls even on slight inclines - pressing the clutch and gearding down to 4th gear sorts the problem and after a few minutes it will pull away in 5th again.. any ideas?

Sounds like it could be a fuel or spark issue. My H will do that
when the fuel line is getting blocked with rust. It will get better and
worse in fits, but it won't get all the way better till I stop and clean
it out.

This one has a Mag ignition and new Autolite 388 plugs.. new head gasket and piston rings about 6 months ago.. I think the compresion is ok but not 100% sure. both fuel tanks have been cleaned recently and fuel flow is good. is there anything i can chek on the carb?

My gas H used to do that. I went through several ignition tune-ups
and finally rebuilt the carb, but what made the biggest difference
was setting the valve clearances. I had never thought of doing that
until I saw the tip of the day on here. It was like getting a new
tractor. more power and MUCH better starting. Just another
suggestion if it's not in the fuel system.

Open the drain petcock on the carburetor and see what kind of flow there is. There should be a full stream for several seconds.

thanks guys, I will try both of those suggestions. The valve clearances were only "roughly" set if im honest - when I did the head gasket, I never thought it would make such a difference though and this problem only started recently but I think its time to re check them!

Valve clearances should be set at 0.020" with the engine cool. If the clearance is too small, it will go away entirely when the engine is at operating temp, and then the valves CANNOT close completely, and the engine will run rough and lose power.

thanks Rustyfarmall.. are the recommended clearances the same for al engines? mine is a kerosene (starts on petrol) engine

Yes, same for all. Actually, the recommended clearance is 0.017", but that is for an engine that is AT operating temp., and by the time you get the engine fully warmed up, drive it back to the shop, shut it off and remove the valve cover so you can get to the valves, it will already be cooled down enough that the 0.017" setting will too tight when the engine is fully warmed up again. 0.020" with the engine cool seems to be a fairly good compromise.

It make not solve your problem, but an Autolite 388 is a resistive plug. Autolite application guide specifies a #3116 non-resistive plug. Also use copper wires.

(quoted from post at 09:56:44 12/14/10) Had the same problem with my all fuel H until i set the float to the correct height. Hope this helps. MJ

thanks MJ . how did you know what height to set the float? any tips?

Float height is 1 27/32" The information is included in a GOOD carburetor rebuild kit, and is also available in an I&T IH#8 shop manual.
