The dipstick to my hydraulic reservoir is just dangling from the cap. It looks like some form of cloth held it in there. Is there any way to fix this without buying a new cap? Should I just rip off the stick, put six quarts in and hope it doesn"t leak?

After taking off both hood pieces I noticed the cover plate to the steering gear was very dirty and could tell the bolts had not been removed in probably decades. The oil inside looks great though. Anyway, just wondering if the plate on the front that requires a 1" or larger wrench is where you drain the oil. And also does this require gear oil or SAE 30, detergent or non detergent? Thanks

Most of them have lost the dipstick down into the reservoir, in my experience. I would drain the liftall and put in 6 quarts of new oil and leave it at that, but that's just my opinion. I think the full level is 8" below the top of the neck but I'm not sure. Once you drain and fill you can find out how far down it is and secure and re-mark the dipstick if you want to. If you take that large cap off the front of the steering box that will let at least a lot of the oil out, but if it looks clean I'd be tempted to leave it how it is, especially if it doesn't leak. I think it would take gear oil but I am not sure. Mine has grease in it because the oil leaked out, but that is not proper as I understand it.

SAE 90, if not available 80W90. Gear oil is not classified as detergent or non-detergent.

I don't think there is anything wrong with your cap. The dip stick is not meant to be solid. That cloth that you see is actually a small filter in the cap. There should be a little air hole somewhere in the cap or the threads so air gets in. It takes 6 quarts of hydraulic fluid of you choice to fill it.

It takes six quarts of thirty weight non-detergent, but some guys run hydraulic fluid and they say it works fine. Like someone said the dipstick is not attached to the cap, you unscrew the cap and the dipstick can then be pulled to check the oil level.

The steering gear on the front bolster uses 80-90w gear oil. Usually the seals have failed leaking all the oil out long ago. Rather than replacing the seal the farmer would just pack the assembly with tube of grease. The 1" cap is actually a bearing retainer and if you remove that most of the oil will come out.

Thanks for the info everybody. How much oil should be in the steering gear case? It only covers to right below the uppermost gear.
