How do I replace the condenser in my FARMALL SUPER A with a magneto.
It looks like I loosen a hold down screw and slide it out a hole to the right where the kill wire is attached. But how do I remove the odd shaped washer the kill wire is screwed to. It has a 7/16 nut that screws onto the condensor and this washer looks like it is flush with the housing.
Thanks

I have always pulled the mag then the plate on the block side can be removed and the condensor will slide out backwards. The baakelite washer the condensors stud goes thru mite be removed if you can get the condensor to move back at an angle enough but it will be hard to do. Iv heard of it being done but wandered if the rear plate was gone so they could back the condensor up enough to remove as over the years the back dust plate has been removed and not replaced. good luck

Thank you very much Gene. This is actually a question a friend/acquantiance emailed me, and we've never worked on a Super A with magneto, so I thought I'd ask. I will send this response to him, and if he has any more questions I will post them here. THANKS SO MUCH.

I can't remember how I did mine, it was quite a few years ago but I would recommend a manual. When you take it off the tractor (if you do) you have to take note of where the shaft is etc or else you will lose your timing. If you end up pulling the mag. apart, you will definately have to get a manual to help put it back properly. There is nothing hard about doing it, just need the manual to help.

My 2 cents.

I've removed them by loosening the nut where the kill switch is attached. Take out the hold down screw at the back of the condenser and the condenser will slid back far enough to get it out. This is with the back-plate still on. This doesn't take as many steps as removing the mag and retiming it.

My experience is with an H4 magneto on a Farmall H.

I don't know how to add URLs but here it is. Maybe you can copy and paste.

You dont need to retime the mag when installing just point the rotor the same way as it was when removed and it will go rite back in and run ok. Ive done them that way for more yrs than i can remember as i have had many of them out for servicing.

I center punch a mark on the mag & the casting it bolts up to & put it back on the mark to install. Get the rotor pointing the same also.
