IH 434 / oil in right side brakes

took the right side brakes apart (this is the side where the diff. lock is located) and found the whole assembly saturated with oil. Any idea on the cause?

Yep,..........ya got a leak or you were sabatoged.

Try to check the level in your differential. I had mine way too full, and my right side was leaking (on a 2424). It was time to change the fluid, so I carefully read my owners manual and figured out I only needed 5 gals. I took out 12 or so, if I remember correctly.

It doesn't leak any more, but I still need to pull it apart and clean the discs - the brake is spongy.

thanks all for your replies

update:where the spline shaft for brakes comes out of the casting, there is a approx 10" diameter metal plate (brake pad and brake assy interface with this). plate is held on by 6 bolts, however, 2 rear bolt heads are broke off (sabotaged for sure!) I have some work to do to fix that and I want to remove this brake plate entirely to clean and reseal to the rear casting. However, plate will not come off. It seems the spline shaft is holding it on. Only way I figure the spline shaft can come out is if I go inside the rear differential? Need a double shot of courage for this.

pls give a shout if I"m missing some important point here or if you can recommend a better approach. I guess I could try to seal it back up without removing the plate (once I fix the bolts), but I can only get about 1/8" gap between the plate and rear casting. hardly enough to do a good job at cleaning and sealing.

to be cont"d...

update:

trying to break apart the hydraulic reservoir to get inside the differential. in attached pic, back right tire is removed and tractor weight is supported entirely by the 2x4 under the 3 point lift arm (jack stand is 1/2" under in case it breaks away). Anyhow, the point is it won't break apart even when weight of tractor is on it. I have all the visible bolts removed around the perimeter of the hydraulic reservoir. What's it take to actually break this apart?

Wow Troy I am in the process of fixing up a 2424 I picked up really cheap that looks just like yours only mine is yellow :(
Mine was leaking really bad from the right brake and found that the differential shaft was missing the snap ring holding the bushing in. Had to do a little filing to get the slot back in the shaft and replaced the o-rings on the bushing. That stopped the major leak, but still have a slight drip coming from behind the plate.
I may have to do the same thing you are doing t fix that and the axle seal.
I think the manual says 17 gallons if you have a front mounted pump.

anyone ever remove the bull shaft? I'm afraid this assembly is pressed together and will require more muscle than I have in my arsenal.

I am about right where you are now on my 2424, gong to replace both rear axle seals and the differential seals. Hopefully the O rings will be ok to reuse.
I think you may need to remove the bearing retainer cap at the end of the axle before you can press the axle out.

Hi, Randy -

I"m having trouble getting the cage free from the differential. It slides out nearly all the way, but the outer race of the ball bearing catches on the outer race of the roller bearing and that"s all the further I can get.

I ordered the service manual and waiting by the mailbox until I get it.

Any advice for above problem? Was the root cause of your problem the oil seals?
I think root cause on mine was broken bolts and oil seeping between main differential housing and cage. also, RH axle gasket was compromised along the flat area.

What are you doing for gaskets when you re-assemble? I"m thinking to get sheet stock from McMaster and cut them. Mcmaster P/N 9453K203 Vegetable Fiber Sheet Gasket 1/32" Thick, 36" Width, 5" Length Roll $18.78/pc

Hmm, don't really have an answer for that, pretty sure the bearings should come out of the cage if that is what is hanging you up.

I had several major leaks from the cylinders on the loader, oil coming from the differential lock, left axle seal had been leaking bad and maybe ruined the tire.

So one thing led to another after I had drained and filled with hydraulic fluid to the correct level the leaks really started showing up.

I bought this tractor non running and had to take the carb apart and replace points, condeser & cap, she runs pretty good but was leaking like heck.

I will probably make my own gaskets, I have sheets of several different thicknesses.

The big gasket on the top housing is still in good shape so I can reuse it.
I thought It was going to be a real bear to pull it off of there when I saw there were already 2 broken bolts but it came off with little effort.

Here is my connection

sounds like you're heavy into... I'm glad I'm not alone!
did you fix the leaks on the hydraulic cylinders for the loader yet? i will need to do the same at some point. Piece of cake or did you have probs?

I took the bucket cylinder & both power steering cylinders to a local hydraulic repair shop. I have never worked on hydraulic stuff before so I thought I would send these out. I think they just need new seals but they were going to check them out and let me know if it was going to cost more than $75 to fix them.
