Hydaulic fluid for a Farmall 460

Thanks to the advice from responders in the tractor forum, my 460 is running again. I have changed the oil in the tractor and now want to change the hydraulic fluid. Should I replace the fluid with HY-Tran from our local Case-IH dealer or could I save some money and use the universal hydraulic fluid that Rural King or Tractor Supply carries?

The Hydraulic fluid is a no go. It must be transmission rated. The fluids from Farm stores that meet JD or CaseIH hydraulic/trans oil spec are just fine. but a fluid rated for Hydraulic use is not rated for gear use, and has no film strength when used with gears and power train lubrication. Jim

It may not seem like it but you have already changed the hydraulic fluid. The oil for the hydraulic system is the same oil that is used by the center section and rear frame. They are connected as well.

The IPTO is divorced, however. It has its own drain, check level, and fill locations. Use Hy-tran.

The money you just saved should be used to buy an operator's manual.

With respect, he (I believe) has changed the engine oil, not the Hy-tran filled cavities. He will spend the bucks on oil, but need the manual as well. This site sells manuals as well as Ebay and others. Jim
