Saved another one from the scrap yards!!!

Hey guys, just thought I'd share with you all what I bought today. I had to pay dearly for this one, but its future looked pretty sad and I could see through all the grease and dirt that this is a good tractor and needed to be saved!! The lady that had this one (1972 Farmall 140), had inherited it from her father when he passed in 1993. It has been used 3 times since then, which the last time was around 1998. I bought it Not Running, but it is a 1 owner since new and has all of the original equipment that was bought with it (1 point hitch). The cultivators even still have the decals on them. It came with a 1 point hitch, complete runner planter & side dresser set-up, complete cultivator, set of hillers, 1 point hitch "screw type" adjustable double gang disk, 1 point hitch double flatbottom breaking plow with all colters, original drawbar extension, and a 1 point hitch Bush Hog Brand 4 foot rotary cutter. All of the equipment is in "like new" condition as well. I just hope the tractor runs as good as it looks (for its age). I guess we will see tomorrow!!! :) BTW, if anyone is wondering; I had to give $3,300 for everything. She was asking $4,000; but there was NO WAY I could go that much especially since the tractor wasn't running. Anyways....enough talk, and here are some pictures........

Pictures!
I'm green with envy, however, I'm glad you saved it. Given all the implements, it's a steal at that price. Congrats.

You are lucky to find a tractor and all the original implements with it. That doesn't happen every day. Good luck with your restoration. Keep us updated with pictures. Kent

Yeah, folks are strange. She would have gotten maybe what? $500 from a scrap yard. But I have seen people that would scrap them for a few dollars rather than let someone restore them. I think they are afraid someone is gonna get a good deal off of them or something.

Glad you got them.

Gene

PS, now the work begins!

I think that you treated each other fair on the deal.

I would ask for any manuals that came with the machinery..

Old repair receipts and bills of sale would be informative also.. even a copy of them, if they are keeping the originals..

I would think your International version is worth a fair bit more to a collector than a Farmall version. Check external_link

HELLO ALL!! I'm back with GREAT news. After a thorough cleaning with our steam pressure washer, and a can of oven cleaner (1st time it has probably ever been washed); we filed the points, cleaned the plugs, and put fresh gas in her today and cranked her over. No more than 1/2 a revolution until she roared to life (for the first time in 18 years). The tractor runs BEAUTIFULLY and drives just as nice. The motor idles down and just purrs along, and it revs like a new one. No smoke, no weird noises, NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. I do believe we got a good one!! The transmission is super quiet, and the steering is tight too. I have found 1 issue with it, and that is the touch control system. The resivoir unit that bolts to the torque tube is LOOSE. It looks as if all of the bolts are loose, and a couple are missing (we think they have been broken off). It was very low on fluid, but its gonna have to be tightened before we try to use the hydraulics any further. Other than that small issue, we have an exceptional tractor!!! We are just thrilled! Even though we usually sell them; we are thinking we might fix this one up and keep it......who knows though. If I can figure out how to do it, I will upload the video I took today. It is a video of us cranking it up for the first time in 18 years. Maybe I can get it on here for everyone to see.

No, I don't think she thought she would have gotten that much; but believe me.....if something ever happened to her, the person it was passed down to would probably scrap it. I've seen it happen waaay too many times. She even told us that her husband was trying to talk her into doing that cause no one would want an "old piece of junk". HAHA, excuse my laungage; but WHAT AN IDIOT!! Its people like that who cause the prices of this stuff to go up, and make it hard for us to find.

I did ask for any manuals, reciepts, repair orders, bill of sale, etc. that they had with it; and she said she rememberd seeing a manual for the tractor years ago; but didn't know where it would be. She said they didn't have anything else though. Oh well, it was worth a shot.

Just wait til I get everything repaired on it, and paint it. I am gonna go back all original with it (might add key start instead of push button), and it will be a beauty.

Here is a picture of a 1976 1 owner 140 that I did back this summer. The original owner loaned it to a friend, and he caught it on fire and watched it burn. Now, I have given it a new life as it was sitting in her field rusting away; and she is 1 happy Farmall owner once again!!!

Great story.
I have the instructions for setting up the plow correctly - if anyone would like a photocopy, let me know.
My two uncles had tractors I hope to see repaired in the future, for now they are sitting unused but are not for sale. This spring I am getting either a cub or 140 from the local used tractor dealer - he towed in several last year from abandoned tobacco farms that are converting to cattle, hay or horses and have no use for it.
