I am thinking my coil is bad so I need a new one.
My tractor is a Super C. It has a 12v alternator that uses one wire. It has a resistor that brings the voltage down from 12v to 8v at the + terminal of the coil. What coil should I replace it with? Thanks Ron

Valid questions in the previous post, but on each tractor I have converted to 12V I just automatically change the coil to a 12V and ditch the 6V. and better yet get a 12V with an internal ballast resistor and start circuit. Just requires a simple solenoid change which you did anyway when you did the 12V conversion. Good Luck, LarryT

Assuming your diagnosis is correct, a 12v for use with an external resistor is correct. As a 12v no external resistor required (and remove the resistor)

The coil leaked oil when I had it on the charger. I am planning on changing the points, cap, and rotor along with the coil. The rotor is stuck and I am thinking it will break when it comes off. I am thinking that that might be a good time to just change it all. Ron

If the ignition switch was left on with it on the charger, the coil overheated and is toast. The points open and close the circuit to the coil (about 40% of the time they are closed) thus when running the coil gets substantial time off between firing. When left on, the tractor is also not blowing air past it, and it is on all the time.

I would put a big screw driver behind the rotor, and pry it off. If it comes, cool if it breaks it is being replaced. Jim

Thanks. I have been down with the flu for a couple days. Soon as I get around I plan on getting with this project. Again thanks, and I will probably need more help. Ron
