H starting but dying

My H starts but dies after 30 seconds or so and it lasts that long everytime I start it. It smells like its getting too much gas. I"ve messed a little bit with the carburetor adjustment screws but don"t really know which one does which. Also, I don"t know how far to unscrew the gas shut off screw.

Start by connecting a spark tester to one of the sparkplug wires and watch it closely... when the engine begins to die, does the spark fail or continue 'til the engine coasts to a stop?

By doing this you will narrow down the problem to either gas flow or the ignition system.

As to the gas shutoff, if you are referring to the valve on the sediment bowl it can be turned "out" 'til it "backseats" (encounters resistance/you can't easily turn it any more.

Ifn ya dont have the shut-off valve open all the way it cant get enough gas to run very long and stop screwing with the carb.

It sounds like to me you have something clogging the fuel. If you have a dirty rusty tank sometimes it will just let enough fuel through to fill your carb up but not enough to keep it running. I would take the fuel line off and see what kind of flow you have and if none or slow than I would take a air hose and blow back to the tank.
When your H dies will it start right back up or do you have to let it sit?

I suspect your carb float is hung up or seized.
I have a w30 that does the same thing. It runs until the carb empties. After a couple of minutes the level creeps back up and I can start it again.

you can test this by unscrewing the drain on the carb and putting in a clear hose with a 1/4 pipe to tubing adapter. Hold the hose up and see there the gas level is when you turn the gas on.

Start the tractor and watch the gas level in the carb. If it drops and the tractor dies , you have to work on the float or fuel line.
To see if the fuel line or supply is the issue just undo the line going into the carb and run that into a bucket using a rubber hose, for a couple of minutes. If flow stays constant the carb is the problem.

good luck

It won't start back up again for another 15 minuets or so. It smells like gas and I can see gas saturating the carb from the outside.

Well it certainly sounds like your float is stuck just about completely closed. When the fuel is on the level slowly rises to overflowing the carb. When you start the tractor it quickly empties and the tractor stops.

I have made a clear 1/4 inch hose with a 1/4 pipe to tube connector. The hose is around 2 feet long. Take the drain out and screw the connector into the carb. Then turn the gas on holding the open end of the hose above the carb. It will be very obvious if the gas level slowly rises high. If the float is working well it will quickly fill the carb.

these hose can also be used for checking float level settings. I use it all the time.

good luck

I think your float is letting too much gas in the carb and engine is flooding. Do you get black smoke from muffler before it dies?
