504 Diesel won't start.

I just bought a 504 diesel that has been sitting for a couple of years,I can't get it started, all the glow plugs work, I put on a new fuel filter and bled the system up to the pump. I loosened the injector lines at the injectors and have fuel there but it seems that there is very little pressure at the injectors. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

I know so little about this i should proably keep quite but i just had the pump and injecters done on a 460D. After reassembly we could not get the lines to blead so we installed a 12 el fule pump ahead of the filters. It worked/works and that is about all i can tell you.Bud.

The only two diesels I have messed with that sat for years there was something stuck internally in the pump so it would not throttle up.

I hope you have some experience with diesel so you get my drift. Batteries are very important and even if they appear to be spinning the engine over, they may not be spinning it fast enough for good start. Put some booster cables on the batteries you have in it and try the start.
Now what I am about to tell you you need to be CAREFULL. Try a shot of ether when spinning the engine over,DO NOT USE THE GLOW PLUGS WHEN USING ETHER! I have seen engines start with a whiff of ether that would not otherwise start.
It sounds like you have bled things correctly and have fuel at the injector, the injector may be slobbering the fuel in, instead of spraying it in, so a whiff of ether can make the combustion occur. Have your throttle full open when trying the start..if you are getting white puffs at the exhaust its going to start.

Also in the manual it says I should bleed the return line at the top of the pump, when I disconnect that line I get fuel returning from the tank but not from the pump is this right? The tractor does try to start but doesn't keep running.

I assume that's the roosamaster injection pump. I have seen the plungers in them stick from sitting a long time. I don't think your going to get them loose without tearing the pump down. other thing is make sure them glow plugs are working, you might have to use them 30 seconds. i think that engine is along the lines of a 282 and thats how they are....

Like others have suggested, maybe a boost as they need to spin to start. Another thing, a lot of people let go of the glow plugs when trying to start them and that is a sure way of the engine trying but not being able to keep going. Keep those glow plugs on until it is running clear. A good tow with fuel (throttle) shut off until cyls are warmed a little while holding the glow plugs and giving it throttle in 5th gear direct drive will wake it up.

Thanks for the replies I finally got it started with two batteries a booster charger and a little bit of ether.

Ether is a no no with any glow plug engine, can blow up entire intake manifold and air cleaner system as at least one intake valve is always open and that ether can hit a hot glow plug.
