There is a farm sale in my area coming up soon. On it there is a IH 512 plow to be sold. I'm wondering if my IH 756 German Diesel can pull in in average to heavy conditions? My tractor has an M&W turbo and has been tweeked a little bit to trun out around 90-95 HP. Thanks!

What size is it? I assume #512 is just a model number, like 700 735, etc... I wouldn't want to pull more than 4-16's. I have 4-16's behind my 806D in heavy clay, and that takes it for all the power I've got running 8-10 inches deep in 3rd gear, if the going is good, 4th gear. (TA in direct.)

I think 312/412/512 was fully mounted, had a depth guage tail wheel option, were made in 14 & 16" bottoms, was not steerable like 540/550/560 series & newer 700 up. I believe it will depend on your soil type, would guess it would be a load unless tractor is weighted, fluid in rear tires or at least 3/4/5 weights per side, front full 10 weights. I used to set-up & deliver these new, little fuzzy but I think you can drop off a bottom, move tail wheel ahead.

It doesn't have 12" bottoms. IH parts book shows 14" or 16".

So it's a 5-14" or 5-16".

You should be able to remove the 5th bottom and move the tail wheel up one if you find out you can't pull it.

Whether the 756 can pull 5 bottoms or not will depend on your ground, the condition of your tires, and how much weight you've put on the tractor.

It turns out I was wrong on the model. I went back to look at the plow again today and it is a 550. It appears to have 5-16" bottoms. I plan on putting 4 pairs of wheel wieghts on each wheel and I'm gonna try to come up with 8 to 10 100 lb suitcase weights for the front. My rear tires are about 50% tread. There also is an oliver 4 bottom plow so I'll see how much they are each going for. Maybe the oliver would be a better investment and more evenly matched. Thanks for the replies and info!

We pulled 4 14's with our 756, third and 4th gear. I would go for the Oliver plows. After White bought them out you could get their plows with Case or Ford paint on them, too. They are the only plows my friend who deals used equipment will touch.
