have got a problem with 450 diesel it acts like fuel filters are bad but have changed them it acts like it is not getting anough fuel l have a push bar and as long as i push it with another tractor it will stay running if you idle it down its ok open throttle up it starts to increase r.p.m. then acts like it runs out of fuel could it be fuel pump to injector pump i have a good flow coming from tank any help appreciated please call 302 242 7704 or does any one no any 1 in the east that works on those ol gals im in delaware thanks fred

What do you have for pressure at the gauge on the pump? if you have the old gauge on there get a numbered gauge on it, you should have at least 40lbs. If you less then that the lift on the back of the injector pump is weak.

If you changed the fuel filters you need to bleed the system. If you"ve been trying to run it you will probably need to bleed the injectors too. While running the tractor on gas, open the bleed screw under the primary filter until you get a steady stream. Then do same to the final filter. Then do each injector one at a time. After that, switch to diesel and she should hit right off. On the newer engines with the spin on filters often you can get away with filling the filters with fuel before you screw them on. You con"t do that on these, so you have to bleed every time

oliver, Could be that the inlet on the cut-off valve in the tank might be partially stopped up! Those valves have a small pipe that sticks up off the bottom to keep water and crud from getting into the fuel filters, but after 50 yrs of life those tanks have sweated and crud and dirt and rust flakes have accumulated in the tank, You might need to flush out the tank first and see if that is the problem.
To Check break loose the fuel line just in front of the filters, blow compressed air back into the tank, reattach the line and run the engine, see if that fixes the problem.
If it does for a little while, or at least till it stoppes back up....then the tank and the crud in it is the problem. The fix is a tank cleaning and a fine screen afixed to the inlet pipe of the cut-off valve. I can tell you about a nice premade screen you can get for it, Hollar if you like 512-577-3837.

thanks andrew you read the hole post. the tractor was acting up i changed filters and had it running for mabe 20 min to 30 and then it stopped. and would do nothing i did notice that the gauge you are talking about said change filters. where would i look to get a pick up pump thanks fred

You can get them rebuilt by most injection pump dealers. I had mine done on my Super MD about 3 years ago, if i recall it was around 100 bucks or so, to replace some bushings and seals. If you can not find anyone local to do it, Centeral Fuel Injection will. I would get anouther gauge on there though to confirm this though, but most likley its the case. There actually pretty hard pumps to mess up, now to fine tune thats anouther story...

Email is open if you want more info

i had the same symptoms on my 650 when i was restoring it. turned out to be the mesh filter in the glass sediment bowl. it was really gummed up with years of sitting in old diesel. it starves the pump but still allows enough fuel for it to keep running. once it's cleaned bleed the system properly and thoroughly.( make sure fuel tank is full while bleeding )
