Just Curious How Many Of These Were Made This Is A 1954 Farmall Super MD #52,2XX Found This Tractor Near Princeton Sitting Behind A Barn Was There To Repair A Leaking Pipe In The Farmhouse
Been Sitting They Said For 20 Plus Years And Made A Deal To Trade A Day Of Pipe Repairs For The Tractor It Is Very Straight Metal Is Perfect Tires Shot What You Guys Think?

I think you got taken on your work if the engine is locked up.....Unless you have alot money to throw away. Just my opinion, so dont get mad!

You made a good deal as there arent very many for sale. It will cost some real money to get running but fully restored would be worth 8-10 thous maybe more

Don't know if you have to furnish any materials. It could be worth a week of work or more the way it sets. Probably less than 100 made in 1952 and maybe the single digits over 52000. If its over 52233 that would be higher than any SMD serial # sent to Red Power Magazine.

Hi Danny: If you can read Serial number on the ID-Tag, it should be 1953 more likely since 1954 was considered SM-TA ( SMD-TA if diesel). I can't find my IHC data book right now so I am just going by memory since we bought the last SMD at our IHC dealer. The newer SMD-TD was just unloaded there at that time. The "Fiscal" years for IHC was not Dec31-Jan01 but rather November or so as to which they called the year for it being built. ag..

According to Guy Fay's "International Harvester Tractor Data Book" the '53 SM serial nos. ran from 501906-512541 or 512540. OP said the tractor had a serial # of 52xxxx which would make it a '54. In the same book Mr. Fay says the SMD was discontinued on Feb 1, 1954 and that there were 5,199 SMDs made during their production run starting in 1952.

As you stated, IH's model yrs began on Nov. 1

soybeanjoe you made a simple mistake also. You are using Louisville SM serial numbers. SMD were F numbers 5 digit. poster said the serial # was 522xx. Do the same thing myself from time to time. For the other poster the serial would need to be 60001 or higher for a SMTAD.

Hi soybeanjoe: Thanks 4 the nitty gritty details.
1953 or 1954 does not really make a bit of difference, most likely. The Super M-TA which followed ( or more likely was already being build on a different production line, was the "big deal." The SMD was history fairly quick. A few more years saw MANY changes mostly for the better and lots and lots more power and more gears to choose from plus hydraulics ports all around most tractors.. The SMD was the last of the basic Farmall tractor... With that said, I'd really like to have a good running one over the rest of them.. I got appointed to drive ours for almost every job for 6 full years. I could still like driving one again.. ag. ret.
By the way, I just now remember something about the gas and diesel sharing the same serial number "string." Gotta check that info out.? Makes fewer diesels since gas was selling more at that time.. Not a seperate serial numbers for each?

Hi D Slater: I did not see your post which was about 17 minutes before mine.. I guess I don't really care too much about serial numbers as I do remember seeing ours in the showroom area 100percent NEW and then later getting on it seeing it do a little work at home for its first job moving very big rocks that our MD couldn't and kicking out some smoke under load while doing it. That was enjoyable.. dern good tractor.

I don't know about that. The part where he said it was BEHIND the barn rather than in it for 20+ years will start to lower the value pretty quick. One could assume the motor is trashed at this point...but you never know. Diesels don't usually stick near as hard as a gasser.

agpilot, according to Mr Fay IH did not keep a seperate serial # list for the gas & diesel letter series. You might want to ask over on Redpower as there are several more knowledgeable people than myself

I grew up in the '50 driving IH letter series tractors. We bought a new '54 SM which was my favorite tractor. I always regretted trading it off bak in 1971. Currently I have a SMTA, a '53 Stage 1 SM, a '53 State II Louisville SM, and a '49 M that I play with.

I still farm, along with my son, and have always been mainly IH & now CIH equipment. We've owned a few green tractors (4020, 4640, & a 8310) over the years but always end up going back to red. Currently owned CIH tractors are a'09 MX 275 & a '91 7140 mfd.

D. Slater, thanks for the correction. When I read agpilot's original post I just grabbed Guy's book out of the desk drawer and turned to the SM listings. I should have paid more attention.

I believe he was answering the OPs question as to how many were made, not the value of the tractor.

For a leaking pipe???? You should have completely replumbed their house. I know plumbers are high, but for just [b:2262f1acb0]A[/b:2262f1acb0] leaking pipe???

Danny,
I think the real point of your post is that you are now capitalizing all of your letters.
Wasn't it a pain in the rear just to capitalize the first letter of every word.
